They should be long? i made then really short so the hatch would catch. SHould they be long?

Here is a picture of the two nipples without the vacuum hoses. the back of the engine is towards the right.

The pins should be just long enough to catch the latch completely. Just dial it out 1/2 turn at a time until it catches completely. You should not be able to pull it open without using the key

I shall look at the hatch pins tonite. I replaced that valve a week ago, it was new and did not have any RED marks :S

It is not a fuel smell, nor is it an oil smell. It MIGHT be a slight exhaust smell, it smells weird that's all.

just back them out longer just enough to catch completely. Not sure exactly how long but its about 70%

You may want to check for any cracks on your headers. When I had a crack I would get exhaust fumes in the cab. This would happen on wot.

But wouldn't make fumes in the cabin at all times? even with the hood open?
