89 944 Turbo Cam Belt Whine
My son's 28,000 mile turbo just had the belt, pulleys and waterpump replaced. We had it apart to replace the gasket between the top of the head and the cam tower. Got the car back and there is an rpm sensitive noise which sounds like the belt is to tight. This is the 2nd time the belt has been replaced since new(first time @15,000). This sound was not there before the belt replacement.
Should the sound have changed ? Any input, comments or suggestions to help an air-cooled Porschefile would be appreciated.

In order to pull the cam tower, the cam belt has to be loosened. When they reinstalled it they probably just readjusted it too tight. Take it back to them and have them check the tension. It's also possible that it's the balance shaft belt making the noise so have them check both.

Absolutely follow-up on it Check this site

here there is a sound clip of a too tight belt. This can cause a failure- don't ask how I know

The balance shaft belts are too tight. I got that, my specialist has this thing with belts, like making them tight. I think he put them on 4.0 for both, the balance shaft belt should see a nice 2.7 (faily loose). Too tight, and the engine would start shaking, grumpling, putting, and could even snap the balance shaft belt (ask me how i know )

I will say that when I had my belts done there was whine for about 250 miles, and it has since disappeared. I had my belts re-tensioned and no additional issues...Have someone check the tension and see what you get...

Drifting
I had a whining noise after a belt replacement on my n/a... it was a roller that was on it's way out. Had I replaced the rollers with the timing belt, I wouldn't have had all those bent valves.

Yep, balance shaft belt is to tight. I did this once using the Kricket and I had to replace my BSB tensioner on the 1,500 mile checkup because it was clearly more difficult to turn (bearings shot) than the ones the came of after 40k miles. I then borrowed a neighbors P9201 ( I am very fortunate and grateful!) and liked it a great deal more...I am a bit of a perfectionist and I wanted the more accurate tool. I have since bought one of my own of a fellow Rennlister. And in addition I do have Bruce's wrenches which work like a charm. I love the color on your 993TT...is that Arena Red? One of the sexiest cars ever made in my opinion.
