Default DIY: Oil catch can/breather? (NZ951?) EDIT: group buy in formation.

I want an oil catch can/breather, but dont know exactly how to make it and whatnot. I'm thinking, if the piping isn't to long, mounting it where the windshield washer tank sits currently would be good, but elsewhere is fine too! Anyone wants to either A) give me in depth instruction, why and how it works etc (i like to understand what I'm doing) a write up would be nice. or B) make one for me. in this case, function is most important, however I would like it to look nice as well, since I like a nice looking engine bay. thank you gentalmen!

yea, i just got that...
is this a decent setup? why do some have breather filter on top, and this one doesn't?
What does everyone think of this one? will it do the job well, or should i keep looking?

That's because this can is designed to be routed in line with the stock plumbing. The top vent goes back to the intake.

The ones with filter on top is designed to be vented to ATM. But to install that kind of can on the 951 you need to drill out the air/oil seperator, or else you're risking blowing the oil pan gasket or dipstick etc.

I recently purchased the kit supplied by Lindsey Racing which has the fillter on the top. I am surprised that an organisation with their level of experience would sell a product which could cause problems.

The tank is still to be fitted as, those of us with the steering wheel on the correct side have bits an pieces in the way of the prescribed mounting point.

Plain facts... search the archives, plenty of people with problems when running on track with ATM-based breathers.

Also, if you read the lower section on the page where Lindsey sells their breathers you see that they write about this.

I'm not saying you will blow something immediatly when installing a breather like that, but me myself don't like the idea of fixing one thing, when the "solution" eventually can cause another problem.

Mine is vented to ATM like the LR kit, which I originally bought and then sent back cos I had fiment issues. I drilled out the AOS as much as I could when I changed turbos. I agree with Duke on this one.

lol I am not, I have had problems with almost all parts I bought from them. Maybe 4/5 they screwed up in some way.

Strewth, I didn't realise it was such a problem. I'm glad I haven't fitted the kit yet, but it's a shame the supplier didn't alert me to the issues.

Trying to get up to speed, but there is a shed load of posts to wade through, can someone explain why venting to ATM, and thus apparently reducing crankcase pressure, should increase the potential for oil leaks?

Re: Lindsey Racing - I don't think I've bought anything from any supplier that hasn't been a problem in one way or another. Perhaps I should leave things the way Porsche made them and accept it.

Someone on here posted about making your own kit from scratch. Just do a search.

That's basically how the stock system works (but without the can).

A catchcan has internal baffles so when the air/oil mist hits the baffle the oil is collected in the can and the air is either re-routed to the intake or vented to atmosphere.
