Whats that thing in place of the cap and rotor?

that's simply a cover plate to keep stuff out of there, the spark is now powered by 2 coil packs mounted at the back of the firewall, triggered via a hall-effect sensor (part of the tec3).

Just curious but why would the hall sensor be part of the turbo? Wouldnt it be easier to have it placed where the cap and rotor normally sits, integrated into that cover?

part of the turbo??? no, it's part of the crank, essentially. Rather, instead of having the speed / crank position sensors reading off the stock flywheel, there is a bracket holding the hall sensor at the bottom/front of the engine reading a wheel attached to the crank pulley... i am not sure why there rather than off the cam, but my guess is that the physical position of the pistons are more important (aka TDC etc) and sometimes people adjust the timing of the cam and you'd have a BEAR of a time matching that to the bottom-end? i'll have to ask chris...
