"New" 951
Since it seems to be standard practice, I thought I'd post a link to my 88 951 non-S and flap my jaw for a little bit. I'm a first time Porsche owner but not a first time turbo owner. I've owned two Camaros then moved on to all wheel drive turbo Talons (owned several.) Most recent Talon (click for more information) ran 11.918 @ 113 but I want a more sophisticated car now, a new challenge.
Enter stage left a silver 1988 951, LSD, non-ABS, locking system, black leather, mid-grade power driver seat. Two previous owners, both local to me (Marquette, Michigan, just off Lake Superior) and both severely **** retentive. Heated garage stored, never seen winter and never will. All receipts, 98k miles, recent timing belt and freshly rebuild head (mechanic talked him into it from what I gather), no rust, aftermarket clutch of brand unknown but it's grabby, much like my ACT2600 on my Talon was.
Known issues: Power steering rack leaks slowly, there's a squeak in the passenger rear suspension (shock?), front main seal seeps, inner wall of the exhaust is collapsed (current thread), front struts seem weak, but hey the oil pan seal appears tight and the clock works.
Click on me for pics.
Paid $8000 to a private seller. Not an awesome deal but not too bad of deal from what research I've done.

Great picture of the collapsed inner wall on the cat pipe. Did you get a chance to address that before welding in the test pipes or does it remain collapsed?
If not, what are your plans there?

Hugh - I'm not willing to fork over $500+ for a rather short piece of exhaust pipe from an aftermarket Porsche vendor. Call me nuts but I see maybe $150 in stainless piping, tops. The local exhaust shop which did my test pipes didn't have time to fab up a new cat pipe during my appointment but I'm on the schedule for next Wednesday. Currently I just plan on having him weld me something from 3" mild steel and leave it be. Fast, cheap, and I can do something more serious down the road. And hey, it's weight savings.

congrats dude,
I also moved from a GSX to a 951 - i think i remember you posting on the machv message board sometimes
You know you can get a complete turbo back including downpipe and test pipe from Lindsey Racing for clsoe to $600 :

the exhaust is a work of art, awesome spool and sound
I had eibach springs and KYG shocks on my GSX but my 951 handles so much better just in stock form...

I agree there's not alot of value in spending $500 for a stainless testpipe.
Although like dr pepper noted, $550 will actually buy you the entire exhaust including muffler in aluminized steel from a vendor like Lindsey.
We do need to be clear about terminology, however. Lindsey's exhaust does not include the downpipe. Not to be picky but the actual downpipe is an elbow coming off the turbo with a flange. Speedforce is one of the few vendors I know of that actually sells a downpipe replacement.
The section of exhaust that most people are calling the downpipe is actually just part of the cat section. The collapsed inner wall that John photographed is why replacing just the cat with a short section of straight pipe doesn't always work. Like John is doing, you still need to replace that section if the inner wall has collapsed or is collapsing.
We need to come up with some name for that... Turbo downpipe vs cat downpipe, perhaps?
