turbo blowing oil?
within the past month my turbo has started making a little noise when it finally hits full boost. like a ticking sound i guess, it like ticks 3 times or whatever. if i have just boosted and boost again, it doesnt do it, but if its been a while it does. since then, ive noticed that when at full boost the car smokes. hehe i met a guy who says he goes by "benz" or something like that here on the forums tonite, hes got a maroon 951 and lives here in ames. i cant find him on the forums here tho :/ he just swapped his autothority chips for guru. can anyone point me to him? anyway, after we talked, i pulled away and he was behind me, i gunned it, and left him in a cloud of smoke that WASN'T from my tires could it be my turbo blowing oil into my cylinders? im gonna pull the hardpipes tomorrow and take a look, im scared of what i might see. if so, what could be wrong, and what would be the fix? thanks!

If it is blowing oil on BOOST, sounds like your turbo. If it blows oil off boost, could be your valve stem seals. Are you sure its not coolant your blowing? Sounds like it may be your headgasket... what color is the smoke? Blue = oil.

If the turbo is original, im assuming it has a fair amount of miles on it- sounds like its time to have it rebuilt (not a bad time to upgrade!)- but im afraid changing the turbo is fairly labor intensive (a friend and I just got done replacing mine a few days ago). Its not as bad if the turbo is a direct bolton though- mine required some grinding and other work to get it to fit.

yeah, im pretty sure its original. how much would the seals be? how much would a rebuild be? maybe it IS time for an upgrade, but that would require new chips, etc etc etc.......

You can get a rebuilt kit ranging from $99.99 ~ $199.99 (depends where from). But, rebuilts are recommended for professionals. There is a Huntley Racing turbo on ebay for $200 i think? with around 5,000 miles, there is also a NEW K26/6 on ebay as well. You can upgrade from Lindsey racing, Speed force, kokolen...but they start at $900+. It is all on what you want and what you can afford really.

Since you have the Autothority Stage 2 Chips, you are running 15psi? if so, then i guess a mild turbo wouldn't be a problem. A turbo (garret or K26/7) wouldn't be a problem for boost, but to get most out of it, you would need MAF/MAP sensors, maybe bigger injectors, MBC, boost gauge, a/f ratio gauge, modify the intake boot (it is 2.5" or 2.75" i belive) and MAYBE the turbo downpipe as well.

I have a stock turbo with 84k miles on it and would be willing to part with it for next to nothing. No play in the turbine and bearings feel good.....just as another avenue.

hmmmmm...........
how long does it take to swap out a turbo? i took a look at the procedure at clarks garage, looks like i could swap in a day no problem and still have time to go out at night
again, whats the cost of rebuilding? david, im interested in your turbo.

The intake manifold needs to be removed along with the fuel rail. It shouldn't be more than 3-4 hours to remove, then add a couple of more to install. The trick is to wake up those bolts, you need to tap them gently, otherwise it may turn ugly and one snaps off due to age.

Hey man, I noticed the smoke when you took off. It looked pretty black to me (although it was dark), could that just be from running too rich?
Mike A. just swapped out his turbo, maybe you could get some advice from him if it turns out you need a new turbo.

It's sneakier! Actually the guys who repainted it broke it and I haven't decided if I want to put a new one on or not. I also have the porsche sticker at home, not sure about that either. The badge stays for now, though.
