Question How to clean cam cover and intake manifold? (pic)

I recently removed the intake manifold and I would like to clean the cam cover, head area and the manifold itself. How can I make it shinny? Wire brush to remove gross debris? What else afterwards?

Also, any tips on removing the intake gasket on the head block?

Thanks all!

I wouldn't spend a lot of time on the cover and block if they are staying in place, it's hard to get them really clean without getting the cleaning substances all over the place.

I find the best way to clean alloy parts is to use a scrub brush and degreaser or strong solvent, such as acetone, followed by a bath in really hot water with a lot of Tide in it. There's soemthing about that Tide that really works.

That's where I stop. I prefer a clean stock finish to polished, and it looks better longer.

Andre, i replaced the gaskets on my 924S a few days ago. First off cover the intake holes with either a clean lint free cloth or duct tape to insure nothing falls in while your working. I used a razor blade to peel the gasket off...just make sure you get all remnants off both sides or you might not get a proper seal. I was lucky enough to have my gaskets come off with the intake manifold when i took it off, My father suggested using a brass wire brush, as the brass will not leave impressions in the aluminum. Not sure how true this is, but it makes sense.

Make sure you pay attention to the proper orientation of the gaskets when you reinstall or you will block the injector spray.

Thanks Duck!

I have three gaskets on the intake but the #1 piston gasket is stuck to the block. I guess I'll stuff a rag down the intake and remove using a razor blade like you suggested.

I've had good luck removing gaskets using a plastic paint scraper, after ensuring it has a sharp, straight edge on it with a few strokes of a file. No way to gouge an aluminum surface with it (the scraper, not the file).

What, acetone? I recycle all mine at the local hazardous materials drop off. I have several containers in my garage for different fluids like oil and varsol.

My dad, who retired too early and is now bored, took a wire wheel attached to a power drill to my manifold when it was off. It's still got the rough finish but it has a glow to it now that looks really nice. The down side is it makes the rest of the engine bay look bad.

"The down side is it makes the rest of the engine bay look bad."

Paint the rest of the engine bat flat black (hi temp). I did with the intake painted with silver metallic. Looks pretty good. A lot beter than it did

Anyone ever notice that the intake manifold for a S model has the KLR line and another line right next to it?? But the NON S intakes do not have the second line. At least mine doesn't.

I had my intake coated with Jet Hot Sterling after seeing pics of Ski's, looks great.

When installing new intake gaskets, put a light coat of wheel bearing grease on both sides of the gasket and you will have no problems with sticking in the future.
