The engine code is line 4 on the option sticker. M44/51 is the regular 951. M44/52 is turbo S.
Hard to say what the car is worth. What's it worth to you? If it's a car you want, and it gets a clean bill of health on a thorough PPI, then go from there. Keep in mind the age of these cars, and keep a cash reserve for maintenance. Parts aren't cheap, and with the age of the car things can and do need to be replaced. You'll save major dollars if you can do things yourself.

According to Morgan's book ABS was an option on '87s, and standard on the 951 from '88 on. Streck, the ABS unit is inside the passenger side wheelwell, behind the front tire. The only way to see the unit is to pull the fender liner out.

Of course the other way to confirm the status is to have Porsche tell you based on the VIN. I think they charge you a 100 bucks or something and they give you nice little sheets of paper.
The lack of ABS should pretty much tell you that it isn't an S and no ABS would most likely knock down the resale value of the car. I think the Ses also had different (heavier/stiffer) body bracing than the turbos, but you would really have to know what you were looking for to pick that out.

Go see if you can lock up your brakes.

Can I verify if an ABS unit is installed without referencing options?

Sorry about the turbocharged (i get them mixed up) but from 88+ ALL 951's came with a different diagraph for the wastegate and the S models DID comes in Silver Rose/burgundy colors (open the workshop manuals and it would indicate that limited edition S models). Im not trying to start anything here!

Yeah you can tell if it is there or not. Behind the right front plastic wheel well liner to the rear is the unit. There are also these funky connectors made out of black plastic surrounding a brownish shell - about 3 inches long and a little under an inch in diameter. These are located at the rear and on each side of the engine bay on top of the fender well. Those are some of the HAL effect wires to detect impending wheel lockup.
You can also tell when the ABS does part of its self test when you first start the car rolling. At a couple to 4 mph you will hear a whirring sound come from the unit in the wheel well as it compares rolling speeds of the wheels. If they are too far out of whack the ABS will shut itself down and turn on the idiot light. You can cause this to happen with tires with a much different rolling radius. Or just jack up the rear of the car, leave the front wheels on the ground, start her up and put her in gear. On will go the warning light.

Some don't even have code 030 either, although they have all the M030-related suspension bits.
A safe way to tell if a turbo is an S is to check if it's got both an '88 VIN and a M44/52 engine block ... assuming they're both original
Of course if there's no ABS it's definitely not an S, as mentioned above.

So, color alone is not a sole identifier. OTOH, engine code is.

Overall I think it's a pretty good book. Besides, I forgive him the fault on the turbo cab. It's not like WE got any of those...
