Default Odd Vehicle History

Hello, was wondering if anyone has some opinions on this. I ran a car history report on an 86 944 turbo that has a salvage title. I used the report service that Ebay provides. I noticed a few oddities, was wondering if anyone had some opinion on. I was seriously considering buying this car, but some things seem strange. I would not want to buy a stolen or otherwise, non-titleable car.

1. The odometer check begins in 94 at 129,000 miles.
2. The title history begins in 1994 in OH with 129,000 miles.
3. The last event detail was "Last seen at recycling facility" reported by an "autmotive recycler."

The guy says he has the title and it runs great. The car check does show some damage records, accident records, odometer problems and salvage title. Those items are fine to me, but was wondering why no history prevous to 129k. any ideas? thanks.

Detailed Vehicle History Definitions:

Accident
CARFAX receives information on accidents in most states when an official police report is filed. The level of detail in the accident record varies by state depending on the state's accident report requirements. CARFAX recommends you obtain a vehicle inspection from your dealer or an independent mechanic for any car involved in an accident.

Exceeds Mechanical Limits
A vehicle with a 5-digit odometer cannot accurately track mileage after 99,999 miles because the odometer rolls over. This title is the result of a seller certifying under the Truth-in-Mileage Act, that the odometer reading EXCEEDS MECHANICAL LIMITS of the odometer.

Lease
When someone leases a car from a dealer, the dealer actually sells the vehicle to a leasing company. The leasing company then collects payments for the vehicle from the new owner for 24, 36, 48 or more months. A leasing company can be an independent car dealer or a car manufacturer.

Manufacturer Recall
Automobile manufacturers issue recall notices to inform owners of car defects that have come to the manufacturer's attention. Recalls also suggest improvements that can be made to improve the safety of a particular vehicle. Most manufacturer recalls can be repaired at no cost to you.

New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles.

Salvage Auction Record
Most vehicles sold at Salvage auctions were declared totaled by insurance companies. Most of these vehicles have sustained significant damage but there are some exceptions. For instance, recovered stolen vehicles are often declared a total loss regardless of the actual damage. Rebuilders and Recyclers purchase these vehicles at auction with intentions to rebuild them or dismantle them for parts.

Salvage Title
A Salvage Title is issued on a vehicle damaged to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value; or a vehicle that has been declared a Total Loss by an insurer or other state or jurisdiction. Some states treat Junk titles the same as Salvage but the majority use this title to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again in that state. The following ten States also use Salvage titles to identify stolen vehicles - AZ, FL, GA, IL, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OK and OR.

That's an old recall, to prevent engine fires from leaking fuel hoses. Surprising it's never been done on this car.

I don't like the mileage from 96 to 2000 only 500 miles driven in that time period.

Yeah, well, I don't like the thing about the car being totalled...

I'm sure the price is set accordingly.

It looks like the car was bought at salvage in Jan 96. It was not retitled until Aug 2000. It shouldn't have any mileage if it wasn't titled. Apparently the car was being bebuilt during that time.

You need to look at the car. In '95 (the year of the accident) the car may have only been worth $10K or so. It doesn't take a lot of damage for an ins. co. to total the car, especially at the price Porsche charges for parts. A salvage title is not necessarily a bad thing. You need to check the quality of the work. My 951 has a salvage title and I've had no problems with it (except for stupid mech's doing routine maintenance ). I am 100% happy with her!

well i went and looked at this particular car today. the body was pretty rough as expected. the interior was ok, not the greatest, dash was terrible. the car runs very well and turbo seems very strong. the seller is asking a very minimal amount for this car and it would make a very economical tracker or fixer upper if you can do body work. he was asking only around $3500 for it. located in columbus OH. i can give contact info after clearing with the guy first and give more details if anyone is interested.

Yeah, salvage titles shouldn't scare people away. My car has a salvage title on it as well. Still can't figure out where the original damage was. Had a couple different mechanics and body people look at it. They can tell it was repainted, but no one can find what was ever really replaced. Look at a car hard, and long, get a good inspection, look at records. Remember, even if Carfax says it wasn't ever wrecked, it really could have been, seeing a Salvage title (if you even SEE it, as my current title no longer states the salvage issue) only warns you to look extra hard.
