Default Turbodan's 951 track car rebuild

So a few years ago I was at cups and saucers at Watkins Glen and in the first session on new Nt01s it sprinkled rain and I slipped a little and spun on the laces in the boot and almost saved it except for the front touched guardrail and moved everything over about 3/4".
Had the car put on a celette rack and straightened and front end painted and timing belt service, water pump and oil change.
Drove the car at Mosport for one weekend and all good. Next time out coming into turn 5 I see oil on my windshield and smoke from under hood, pull off track at 5b and engine catches fire, I jump out and over fence, after track shut down marshalls come and put out fire.
pulled engine years later (this spring), sent car to have engine compartment painted and front end (hood, bumper and fenders).
Took apart the engine with my mechanic (somewhat famous Porsche mechanic named Jasper-good friend) this weekend and sending parts to machine shop and ordering some parts hoping to get it back together by early spring. I will post some pics, before, after accident, after fire, and along the way and even video of the fire.

found cause of fire...oil filter not tightened. shop that did belts and oil used Bosch filter....I still have Mann so I know it was not me,

picking up at body shop and putting in garage while prep engine.

what is the best thing to use for a replacement oil line here? they seem very expensive.

Jasper's car buried at present.

I am going to send out my dme and klr. if focus 9 technology the best option? should I do the diagnostic? do I need new reference sensors or just the harnesses?
I have a replacement exhaust manifold that is good, bought a 944na parts car, fuel rail, I have new injectors, rebuild kit, belt kit, lots of questions I will ask here. Hope to bring her to Hershey! and maybe 944 fest if that is happening.
thanks in advance for your help!

cylinder 4 had slight scoring-my friend said it will be fine.
here is the parts car:

Thanks for posting! I look forward to the progress! Parts car actually looks pretty nice.

I’m at what is hopefully the tail end of a full rebuild on my ‘86. Quite the project. Be glad you have an expert to help!

as far as the oil cooler hoses, you can either buy them ready to go, or build your own. There are threads out there for making your own, which is what I opted to do. Not expensive, took a couple hours. One of my hoses is longer than I would like. May end up redoing that or buying a set at the next oil change.

Not sure you’re level of expertise, so I’ll share a couple quick pieces of advice that may help.

Make sure you bag and tag everything. If it’s not too late. Ziplocks with white write on areas are great. And a box for each area of assembly.

Research each step before doing it. videos are plentiful.

the biggest headache for me was reassembling the exhaust and turbo install. First, get yourself a full set of nuts and bolts. I did the exhaust install after engine was back in. Had to do this several times to get it right. Probably 20+ hours of work there. Could now do it in just a few hours. Tips: the heat shield by the brake booster comes off easily, and this helps a lot. Take it off. heat shields by the drivers balance shaft go on before the turbo. Replace all rings and gaskets. Turbo goes on with downpipe installed. Bolt downpipe to engine and tighten those up. Then headers on. Loose nuts there. Reinstall brake booster heat shield. Install Crossover pipe to turbo. Loosely. Crossover to headers. Loosely. Then tighten progressively in the same sequence. This way everything bolts up nicely. Otherwise, they can be a major hassle. The heat shields over the passenger motor mount are also a major pain. I went with an aftermarket option that straps under the headers. Not bad to install.

good luck, and enjoy the process!

Looks like fun! I had my ECU and KLR rebuilt at Specialized ECU and they’ve held up well. That NA looks pretty solid for a parts car…

here is the parts car:
It'll be at Carlisle again this year:

I was there last year. It's a good event that should improve as more people are aware of the venue change.

Hey Danny... looking great, I love a white 944! I'm getting mine ready for Mosport next spring too... nothing major like this though!

I need a front driver's fender... you selling them off your parts car?

Hi photographed the Lindsay racing rebuild kit, belt kit, head gasket, and oil pan baffle. I dropped these off at my mechanic to check over and send the baffle to be welded to the oil pan.

Don't use goetze piston rings. Get OE.
