Default Just got a 540iA

I talked my wife into trading her 96 328i for a mint 99 Aspen silver 540i steptronic with ful sport pack with the deep dish alloys. The 951 stayed in the garage for the last few days while the beemer got a workout. What a car.... very impressed. Awsome motor and suprisingly good road manners for such a pig. The sport suspension is quite good. Looked into an V6 Audi S4 but after driving both, the 540i won the wife over even though its more in the A6 class then the A4 size car. It doesn't really 'feel' that big. Besides, when the need for boost arises, the 951 is close as hand

Anyone else run a 540?

My father had a 540 for a while....traded it for an XJR.

Wish he still had it...handled suprisingly well and very quick.

Congrats on the purchase....you won't regret it!

I have a 740i - same motor as the 540iA - I absolutely love that motor. Even in the 4200 lb 7-series, it hauls A$$.

See link to pic below.

My brother has a 740 (same engine), I had couple of E34 5 series. Great cars! The 540 feels nimble and lots of fun to drive...
One thing to watch out for, the plastic radiator tends to break at the upper hose connection. The engine will be gone before any warning on the dash...

Enjoy it, great car.

My brother has a 540 on a boat at the moment coming over from England actually... from what I've heard it sounds like a very nice car (capable of a GPS verified 270 km/h too, apparently)

My boss is on his 7th 5-series I believe. His current is a '95 540i M-Sport; one of 160 6spd's to come over here. It's white on white and absolutely gorgeous. Far more rare and entertaining then the M5 of it's day (along with 2 more cylinders, too!). I was surprised that it took a sweeping curve at 90+ without feeling like it was straining whatsoever... and that was on the "soft" chassis setting

Congrats on the buy... I hope to one day own a 5 series myself as a daily driver.

I have an E34 540 and we love it. I dont know how much longer we will have it but it has been a good car. It is as fast a stock 951, handles very well for a 4 door, and you can carry the occasional passenger.

Downside:
The back seat is actually pretty small.
The cooling system on them is a nightmare. FWIW, I complained so much that Fluidyne now make a bolt in all aluminum rad. for them! Trust me you will need one at some point.
I have not been impressed with the dealer parts network.

I've had two 540/6speed. a 95 E34 and a 98 E39 which I just sold to get my 330i. They are awesome cars. My 1st one had a lot of mods which I never got around to on my 98. I can highly recommend the 3.15 limited slip and the UUC short shifter (but I guess on an automatic the latter wouldn't work! ;-) If it hasn't had a radiator, it will. The good news is they have dropped in price pretty dramatically over the past year. Good luck with it will continue to grow on you. That engine is pretty sweet!

I always had 3-series but then I made the mistake of leasing a new 540iA in 99. Yes, lots of power and fast but so boooooring with the steptronic. If I ever would get one again it would be a 6 speed.

I would have liked a manual but the wife would not go for it. Good advice on the radiator. Cheers.

MOre seat time has made me an addicted to that sweet motor. How I long for an M5, I test drove an M5 before getting my previous car, E46 M3 which I sold cos I didn't like it after a while. I wish I would have gone for the M5..........maybe one day when they are in the mid 30's I can get one as an addition to the two I have (540 and 951). THis one looks tempting but check out the mileage.

...is 30k all that much to you? It is coming on 5 years old now... that doesn't seem to be all that much mileage/year in my book. I say buy the darn thing and start posting how amazing it is

The M5 on Ebay is at a dealership about 10 minutes away from me. I might go check it out...
