We jsut picked up an E34 535i. It has a ton of miles, but it has been kept very well. All dealer records and whatnot. I haven't driven many cars, but compared to what I have the BMW is awesome. Soon we are going to chip it and do some other basic mods like that, probably MAF too.

Congratulations on the new car. Very nice. If I can add another car to look at, and very resonably priced to boot, and thats the new Acura TL! 270 HP, Tiptronic and the rest of the works. I rode in one the other day. Wow, what a car for 30K! new.

we test drove one of the 2004 TLs, i thought it was pretty good for the price, but the wife didn't seem that impressed. it did torque steer quite a bit. i took the salesman for a test drive on a mostly abandoned curvy road near my place, he left hand prints on the seat from gripping them so hard he did offer to pay me to take him for a ride on the same course with my 951 though

My father has your car's twin: a '99 w/ the sport package and steptronic. He actually bought it new to replace the '67 2000CS he'd been driving daily since 1970. He finally gave up on trying to wear it out and decided he just couldn't deal with the lack of AC, driving stick in LA trafffic, no overdrive, etc. for a 30th year. It sold for $9K, which is almost three times what he paid for it in 1970.
As far as I know, he hasn't had a single problem with the 540. If it's half as tough as the CS, it'll be the last car he ever has.

FSAEracer03 -- I was pretty surprised at the price, myself. Sadly, he sold the car just before digital cameras became common, so I don't have any digital pictures. I do have countless prints from my childhood and early adulthood; my father drove my mother to the hospital in that car when she was in labor with me and sold it when I was 25. I learned to drive stick in it when I was 15. I always figured that he'd offer it up to me when he decided to sell, but apparently I reckoned incorrectly. One day I got a phone call telling me that it was long gone.
In any case, here's a period advertisement. As far as I know, this was a US ad even though the featured car has the euro lights instead of the very unlovely quad lights. My father's was the second 1967 made and for whatever reason had the euro lights as well.

Thats too bad on both counts; I've love to see the photos, and you should have inherited it!
A true classic, and the start of something very good for that moniker!

One thing I have been looking into is a ESS blower, they make a serious power.
""...is 30k all that much to you? It is coming on 5 years old now... that doesn't seem to be all that much mileage/year in my book. I say buy the darn thing and start posting how amazing it is"""
Well, its 30 grand that I have to convince the wife we 'need' to spend on a 3rd car (that we don't really need). If was just about the money, I'd get it. Unfortunately, there more (a lot more) to consider. As much as I like the 5's, I can not bring myself to get rid of the 951........nothing else drives like it.
