Sounds right, when tensioned correctly they always have a "whine" .

Don't forget to retension (or check tension) at about 1500 miles or so, it's in the service manual.

Thanks all for the inputs! The tensioner washer has been made to it’s correct orientation before that video. I have since put back the belt covers and have run the car for about 200km, it has been holding up fine.

The conclusion was that the initial belt tension was set too loose, causing slap. And also, somehow the belt tension was different along different parts of the crank. I adjusted for tension at its loosest part, the belt stopped slapping and I can now barely turn the water pump by hand. Hopefully the other components will hold up nicely with this tension.

On a side note, my balance shafts are probably out of time and I will have to get underneath to skip it a tooth when I can. Vibration is not bad, not a noticeable difference compared to before the belt job. That’s a job for another day 🤭
