Default Thoughts on value of stock vs bespoke

I’m debating whether or not I should go all out and make a beautiful bespoke more modern feeling interior with subtle. Correct materials or two completely redo the interior just as it was stock from the Factory has called out in the window sticker

Tastefully lightly modded is always ok as long as it can be easily reversed. Looks are in the eye of the beholder!

Do you want your car for you, or for the next guy?

has not been decided. I’ll prob keep it for while to see what the values of 944s do. It already has a new 3.0 liter closed deck engine going in. The cost between putting a new engine and re sealing the old one with new belt service/water pump was about a $5 difference and I felt that the value of the car would increase by more than $5k difference if I put the new engine in. Now I’m into the car for $20k total with a new engine. Once I’ve rebuilt the trans, new bushings, ac to r134, a few other fixes, full KW threaded shocks and new clutch I’ll be into the car for around $26k. That’s without touching the interior. Interior is a 5/10 now, all stock. Redoing the seats will be $1500 with the stock look with partial leather. Or spend $5-7k on completely redoing the interior with leather/houndstooth, door panels, headliner, dash, etc…. Is this car(now basically brand new) worth $40k? Was thinking something like this:

If not numbers matching engine then??? It’s not original engine, so it will detract from the value right there. Personally I would want a numbers matching car. Many will walk away just because of that. I am not into the LS Swap, etc….

If anything I've learned watching 951s (I'm assuming you are talking about a turbo) sell on Bringatrailer is that low mile completely original cars are the only thing that gets close to $40k. And even that might have to be an '89 Turbo S, preferably gold rose, for some reason people love that color.

Interested what others think.

well I guess if your goal is a complete restore back to stock then your answer to the first question would have been to keep it stock. I’m keeping the car a Porsche and not putting in an LS. Making it more responsive and reliable. At this point though, you’re right, I’ll do the more bespoke interior and enjoy the car immensely. Keeping the body stock and enjoy Better handling and reliability. Still 100% Porsche.

Guess this was an outlier?

I like the blue. Sort of what I'm going for in black and tan but with the original seats. (Car is Guard's Red).

Do you know who did it? From the look of the dash, I'm going to guess Classic 9.

I used their dash kit and will have them redo my door cards at some point. The seats will have to live with the vinyl covers I used from Only944 for the foreseeable future (until I have several thousand dollars I can't convince my wife would be better spent... another way).

since you've already replaced the original engine with a 3.0, i say make it what you want. all originals bring the bigger money, but a well done example with improvements people can appreciate will do well also. only the top quality 951s are bringing those big numbers. your 'average' 951 is still quite affordable.

951s are affordable right now but have seen a slight increase in price during this classic car feeding frenzy. Prices will continue to appreciate on well sorted nice example 951s. These cars have been so undervalued for so long and now people are taking notice.

I think that blue and houndstooth looks fantastic (though I'm not a fan of the bucket seats).

I buy my cars for me, not the next guy, and I tend to spend far more on them they they're "worth". But I see them as my cars; investments go in my bank account.

I'm in a long term resto-mod of my '89 turbo. (The full interior is at Classic 9 awaiting it's turn for the full Alcantara treatment). I have quite a few other non-standard parts waiting their turn to be redone/installed as well. The car only has 33,000 miles on it, and would have been an excellent candidate for a full blown restoration or left as-is in time capsule form. But, it's my car, and I want it to be something very special. It drives my engineer (as designed by Porsche/bone stock is the only way to go) buddy crazy. The funny thing is, he's probably going to inherit the car when I kick the bucket as I have no descendants.
