Question Dash fan only works on #4, not 1, 2 or 3

I thought there was a post a while ago about this, but can't find it.....My dash fan does not work AT ALL on settings 1, 2 or 3, but blows full-blast on #4. (as it should)

Is there a common problem/cure??

What should I be checking???

Thanks!!!

Mine does that too SOMETIMES. I didn't know if it was part of the automatic climate control or what. It seemed like it was linked to what the temp. control was set at. Not sure...

Also check your resistors and connectors at the resistors... Sometimes they get corroded or even melt. I haven't had time to check mine.

I think it is a relay in the fuse/relay box. It happened to me a long time ago.

I've had the exact same problem on and off. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it don't. Sometimes if I run it on 4 for a while then I can turn it back down to 2 or 3. Haven't had time to dork with it but would love to hear what fixes this...

I'll bet you a dollar its your ballast resistor assembly.

You mean ballast resistors like the ones you have to wire in for larger injectors? Or are you talking about something else? I did wire in ballast resistors when I switched to larger injectors but my fan switch was doing this for about 4 months before I did that. Not saying they're not to blame, just that I saw this problem before I wired in the ballast resistors.

Lift the hood. Remove the rubber strip sealing the engine compartment from the fuse box. Lift the plastic cover over the blower assembly, starting at the fuse box side. When you can see a white rectangular part on top of the blower assembly, remove the connector. Unscrew it and lift it up. Look carefully and you will see two contacts inside. These have pitted, causing the problem.

I trimmed and bent a spark plug file to fit in there so that I could clean the contacts. The problem has not recurred since I did this three years ago.

Also check your electrical grounds, especially the one under the dash in the driver's footwell and the one near the blower assembly.

I can tell when mine are starting to get corroded because the fan 1,2 & 3 speeds are usually one of the first things to go, then follows the cruise control.

I have the same problem. Works only when on #4. I even put in a spare a/c control unit to have it fix nothing.

Claus, is the fix you're referring to dealing with the resistors?

Thanks guys...I love Rennlist!

This is a former article that addresses the topic:
My heater/cooler fan does not work all of the sudden??

It has my discussion on how to fix the resistor.

Yes, this is the resistor asembly. The resistors themselves are fine. The trouble is caused by the contacts pitting.

Yes there are little bimetal contacts in there. I cleaned mine with a couple drops of acid, then cleaned off the acid really well. It's tough to get sandpaper in there to clean them.
