My buddy called me and told me his car will not turn over at all. He says the battery is fully charged, but once he turns the key he hears the starter engage but the battery every thing shuts off. He says if he has the key in and turned on with out turning the car over all the power accessories will work and the voltage gauge registers 12volts. What size is the crank pully bolt so I can tell him he to go buy that size socket and a breaker bar to try and manual to turn the motor over to make sure the motor is not frozen.

I wouldnt bother trying to turn it over by hand, you've got tons of things to try before you worry about the motor being frozen.

DME relay, reference sensors?

Maybe the grounds are corroded and will not let enough juice pass to turn the starter. It's probably something simpler than that but it is an idea.

He said the car was running perfect about 8 hours before it happened!! The car doesnt even turn over it just goes dead the moment you try and crank it, it first makes a click sound like the starter is engaging than everything goes dead like something is froze up.

Check the grounds!!!, excessive current draw due to starting can heat up corroded connections and make them not conduct at all until they cool.

Again, its just and idea. That would be the most technically savvy answer but in truth its probably just the ignition switch.

Can someone tell me the size of the crank pully bolt? Thanks for all the suggestions I will pass them along.

Sounds like an electrical problem, short circuit or something.

Crank bolt is an M16...
Does the starter make any noise besides the solenoid? Check the ignition switch... Check to see if power is going to the starter when in the start position. Everything should turn off when you try to crank the engine except the starter, spark, and fuel pump. Check to see if the battery is shorting when you crank or not.

I would say either a wiring problem or the battery. Take note though if you try jump starting the car without disconnecting the old battery the car will probably still act the same way. The best way to check it is disconnect the old battery and either attach the other battery to the car or just disconnect the ground from the old battery and use the positive terminal as a safe place to hold the wire and jumper cable so it does not come in contact with any metal parts. I have seen batteries with this problem past the load test at the auto stores and still have problems in a car.

I've heard of this happening. Apparently there's some sort of error code in the KLR that requires the box to be unplugged before it would reset itself...
