Default Oil restrictor size with 60-1 HIFI

I am about to run the 60-1 HIFI with oil only. The water is already gone burgers, now I am tryng to work out the 1/8 NPT restrictor hole size. I see number like 0.05 - 0.08. Is there a better size for the 60-1 HIFI? Also, is that measurement in centimetres?

I don't think the type of turbo would matter as far as the size of the restrictor. Just a thought, you will probably be the first person to run a restrictor without oil cooling. Hope the bearings hold out.

You mean without water cooling I imagine... Really? I thought it would be standard practice...? Water only helps at shut down, I will always let the engine run for a couples of mins on shut down after hard driving. Not sure what the problem would be? So what would be a better hole size? Bigger I imagine then, how many millimetres?

Sorry Boostguy, water cooling or no, the oil flow requirements stay the same.

The number is in inches.

If it were me, I would run no restrictor, then if you have a smoking problem go back and install a restrictor at that time.

You won't have much oil cooling going on with a 60-80 thousands hole.

Ok, I will try no restrictor first and see how it goes...

Yeah, NZ I meant Water cooling not oil cooling.

Sorry Boostguy, water cooling or no, the oil flow requirements stay the same.
Sorry Sam, the oil requirement isn't just for lubrication when you aren't running water cooling. Now they are for cooling too. If you think that a .050 hole is going to flow enough oil for adequate cooling of a bearing spinning close to 100,000 RPM, then try it on your engine first.

Bearing lubrication is exactly that, lubrication. The entire bearing assembly gets above 800F, red hot, under hard operation, I trust you've seen the pictures or in real life, I see it all the time. The cooling at that temp is a moot point, as long as the oil is flowing. Regardless of water cooling the oil plays a crucial part in lubrication. The volume of oil required to lubricate doesn't change. As for trying it on my engine, been there and still do that, along with about 5 other guys I know.

So you are running with oil only and a restrictor Sam? What size?

Ok, did you try an run the car without the restrictor or did you put it in because other people had?

Can anyone explain me why we need an oil restrictor? Sorry for the dumb question!

I ran the car with the restrictor because ball bearings do not need to be flooded with oil and not running a restrictor on any turbo in my opinion is a rather dumb idea due to lowered seal life and increased drag, especially at the oil pressures we see on these cars. The arguments for durability are especially funny to me, as most often 951s are rebuilding their turbos due to oil blowby in the seals, exactly what the restrictor prevents - very rarely is it due to bearing wear. The lack of a restrictor is then hurting durability, certain not helping it! There's no way I'd run no restrictor, even to test.

I second westcoastprsche's question about the center section, also who built your turbo for you? And if you don't mind stating how much did it run you? I ask because I am about to put in a new turbo and I am evaluating my options.

Thanks,
John
