Unhappy Installed waste gate shims today to make it so that I can hold 15 psi. Still can't.

I installed my wastegate shims that where provided with my reliaboost, btw what a pita!. Anyways the car is a lot quicker but I still spike to 15 then drop dramatically to like 11 or 12 in 3rd. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Upgrade the turbo .

Stock turbo isn't big enough to hold boost to redline.

If I had the money I would, but it is funny it held it to redline without being shimmed with just chips. But now with all the other stuff it isn't. I don't get it.

I had the same problem, I replaced my wastegate to Tial 38 mm with MBC. Now it held 15 psi to redline or even higher with the cost.

I also had the same issue, I think most people on this board would agree that upgrading your wastegate is one of the first mods to do, i went for a Tial 48mm, SFR has a smoking deal on the 38mm, I think $299 and Tim is a official sponsor now.

Good luck

You can try checking every exhaust connection for leaks and also all the pressure side hoses to make sure you didn't develop a leak somewhere. Check your diverter valve also as it may have ruptured coincedentally and that could affect holding boost. You didn't say how you were controlling boost, but if it is through chips and cycling valve there may be a problem there.

I don't think anybody with a stock shimmed WG and stock turbo can hold 15 psi to redline...maybe 13 psi. And that's only in 4th gear or higher. It's relatively easy to develop lots of boost down lower, around 4000 rpm, but it's normal to drop a couple psi at redine. Shimming merely keeps the drop from being worse.

that turbo will hold 20 psi if you want it too, the wastegate is the weak link. if you want to hold the boost to redline, to need to upgrade the wastegate.

I am using a reliaboost to control my boost. But the funny thing is that before with only the reliaboost, I could hold 15 all the way to red line in third. But now I can't even do it 4th. So I am confused.

Not quite...... The turbo will hit 20psi but it will still bleed off at high rpms.
I'm guessing its a combo of reasons why, not just "it's the turbo", "it's the WG", "It's exhaust leaks", or "it's intake leaks". I think its a little of each.

I just installed a rebuilt wastegate from Guru this evening and went out for a ride. I turned the Reliaboost way down (I thought) but it wasn't enough. I thought I saw 18lbs in fourth at about 5000RPM with stock turbo before I let up. I turned off the highway and opened the Reliaboost a few more turns.

I am now seeing 14lbs as far up the RPM range as I want to hold it. I will keep it there until I get used to it. The car feels much stronger. Boost still builds about the same but once it gets there is stays on hard. I wouldn't have believed the stock turbo had this much performance left in it (100K) but this old car keeps impressing me.

Thanks to Danno who cross-shipped the rebuilt WG before he had my core. I took mine out to shim it and figured, since it was such a PIA (I broke every stud and bolt clean off), I might as well put a new or rebuilt one back in.

I can see how people can get addicted to upgrades.

Thanks for your help, but I have checked for exhaust, intake, and bov leaks, none could be found. Everything looks good. But I was told to try and bypass the CV and run the line directly from the reliaboost to the waste gate. I will try this and report back. btw, If anyone can tell me how to get the line off the cv that runs from the waste gate I would appreciate it. Thanks.

T Breen:

Yea, that GURU wastegate is awesome. Mostly because it has the same performance as all the others, for half the cost. Running and holding 18psi to redline no problem in all gears but first. I see about 16psi in first.
