Angry whoosh sound

When I accelarate hard, I hear a whooshing sound. It sounds like an exhaust leak. Is it coming from the wastegate? Is this normal or is my wastegate springs bad? How do you check them?

The car still pulls hard.

I am a rookie with turbo's, so I don't know what I am hearing. Wouldn't the spool up be more of a whine?

Not for me.....it sounds like you saying wooooooooooshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then the fun begins

You're probably hearing the normal sound. Watch your boost gauge and as the sound starts and builds you'll normally be seeing that gauge on its way up to 1 bar (no vacuum, no boost) and then into boost. When you have high vacuum and little load on the engine, there isn't enough exhaust pressure to keep the turbine spinning. When there does get to be enough the turbo accelerates to 50,000+ rpms and that rush of air is what you're hearing. I've seen that some turbos can get to 120,000rpms.

The turbo wooshing sound will be more prominent if you have a modified intake.

Yea that is normal but if anyone is around you with another turbo car but hopefully a turbo Porsche, go take them out and see what they say, but yea. I LOVE the sound the turbo sound in my car, I know that mine starts to make noise around .8 boost on the guage (so actually a vacuum).

I'll answer here as well in case anybody else wants to know....the splitter was made by me....in about 45 minutes to an hour...something like that, including research.

It's a part of my 3d model of a 951/S2 and soon to be NA and 968 as well....

Here's a better shot of it.

check all your hoses attached to your IM and then the IC hoses. the rubber around the IC hoses could be cracked. i had the same problem, turned out one of my hoses attached to the IM had popped off, so i took the metal sleeve outta the hose (the sleeve actually fell out), deformed it a bit w/ pliers to make sure there was lots of friction, used a rubber mallet to pound it back in, then reattached the hose. no leak now! sounds good again!

turbo944:

Considering how perfect your model is...
don't you think you owe it to yourself to put a decent background in one of these pics?
