I remember the story Porschehead... do you know how much power it's making or how much it weighs?

My car was running in SS class at the time, but was far from stock.
I.T.C. and some other classes had not come along yet.

My car has Factory Balanced Blueprinted motor, 4" sweedish stainless (non catalist) Exhaust,Koni adj. struts with 500LB. coil overs at all 4 corners and adj. spring plates, huge adj. sway bars, Manual windows& mirrors. no radio or A/C, "Mater" 6 point roll cage
fiberglass hood....Etc.

The car currently has Bilstien struts on back without coil overs as the past owner said the car rattled his teeth every time he drove it and he was tired of the harsh ride. Keep in mind this car was used as a street car several years before living under a tarp in his yard for 10 years.Luky for
me he pulled out a box and said oh here are the original Konis with coil overs.

I'm told Escort cars including mine came with 3 Factory chips
a 250H.P.., a 275 H.P. and a 300 H.P. they chose a chip that suited the lenght of the race and track conditions.

I have been told the turbo cup cars started at 250H.P. Vs stock 218H.P.
and over the years changed to 290 H.P. then finaly 305H.P.
The Escort cars were the only ones I've heard of that came factory equiped for variable Horsepower with 3 computer chips 250-300H.P.

My guess is that Club Sport was mearly an option that if you knew it
existed,( the average Porsche buyer probably didnt) was available to order a 944 turbo with most or all of the upgrades and deletes of the turbo Cup cars.

Paying more for a car that had less of some niceties may have been hard for some buyers to swallow.Maybe the Club Sport graphics was a way to justify the price to buyers. I doubt your average person could tell a club sport from another 944Turbo without graphics?

I remember looking for the plastic oil pan and trying see all I could see befor they drove the truck off. We sall plastic engine parts in pictures of some manuals but this car did not have it.White with the swept cs sticker on the side. Thats all I've got for you. I was only 19 and i guess then I just not know the real important things to look at first. However I still say I have seen 968s with coil over rear shocks. Which porsche says none of those cars came into the states. Thats BS I've seen two of these as well. Neither car was anything special but the coil overs were supposed to be part of the 030 option which is shone on PET.

My understanding is that the 86 Escort and Cup cars were all 220bhp. They used the K26/6 turbo and had the regular brake calipers.

In 87, the factory upgraded the cars to 250bhp using the k26/8 turbo, and installed the 928S4 front brake calipers and ABS.

The 87 Escort cars that came to the US were the ones that supposedly had the 3 chip choice of 250 for endurance races, 275 for sprint races and 300 for qualifying.

The 87 Cup/Escort cars where the basis of the upgrades for the street 88-89 Turbo S.

Im not sure when the SCCA Playboy/Escort series ended. Im guessing it was either at the end of 87 or 88 because I have never seen an 88 or 89 Escort car. Maybe the series continued, but the 944 Turbos were not eligible or the factory did not support any more race efforts.

It was 89 or 90 that the European/French Turbo Cup series upgraded their cars to 290bhp. Im not sure if the Canadian series ever officially increased the power output. Ive seen the 305 bhp figure on Canadian Cup cars advertised for sale, but I havent seen the factory publish those numbers on any of the cars.

Also, many/most the the existing race cars have been played with to some extent. So they are no longer in the stock configuration/power as when the left the factory, so that may be where some of the various output figures come from.

So Im sure some of the '86 cars may have been upgraded later to 87+ specs for other racing venues. Porschehead, what calipers do you have and can you read a part number off the turbo charger data plate? It would also be interesting to check the DME/KLR box part numbers and the chips themselves to see if you have factory labelled chips or something else.

The car has been moved to a storage building about 45 minutes away
and a friend is taking an inventory of parts reqd. to put it all back togeather.

When I bought it the motor and trans. were stored seperate from the car in a shed with numerouse part in boxes, so I'm guessing with my limited time and budget it might be back on the road in the next couple of years.

I'll try to check on the brakes, DME unit and Chips but it may be a while before I can get over there.

I seem to recall the past owner, and Ken Williams who raced the car at Mid Ohio,( after they bought the car from Al Holbert/ P.M.N.A.)stating
that the car had 3 computer chips ranging 250-300H.P..

Ken lived in S.C. and had won the SCCA SS class National Championship in a 924 a couple of years before 1986, he knew Al Holbert and was at the Mosport race in 86 and asked Al if he could buy the car? Al said yes so ken not having the cash went to the local Porsche dealer "Leroy Cannon Porsche" in Greenville, S.C
told them of his winning record and would they buy the car and he would drive it for them, They agreed.

I remember the owner telling me to look for the 3 chips " they are somewhere in the car". See photos Ken Williams gave me of the car in 87 at mid ohio and infield on display at Road Atlanta- Driving lights still in tact.

Body looks to be in great shape, what color is that? THe interior also looks like it will be in great shap with a little spring cleaning.

[EDIT:] wait a second... you aren't too far away from me really. Where is the car's driveablility at right now? Is she roadworthy or still in the works? If you can drive that, why don't you come to the 944Fest? Hopefully there will be a pack from my area going caravan, you could meet up with us.

front -in garage

I loosened the panel in front of hood and lifted it up.
I can see the two driving light holes filled in from the top.
