Default Rod Bearing Failure?

Hey Guys-
Last Friday, I took the 951 down to Pueblo (50mi. away) to help Daniel951 on his car. It ran very well all the way down. After about six hours of work on Daniel's car, I started her up to go home. I got about four miles away and started to hear a knocking noise when I accelerated. I turned around to go back to see what the noise could be... During the drive back, I could tell the knocking only happened from 2000-3000 RPM and ONLY under acceleration... No other time. I got back to Daniel's house and listened to the engine with a broom handle. We had to rev the engine in the 2000-3000 range to get it to make the noise still. The sound sounds like it is coming from the oil pan area/bottom of the engine. It SOUNDS like a rod bearing just fell out and the rod cap and rod journal are just knocking on the camshaft. But I figured if that happened it would knock all the time. It doesn't do it on idle nor when it is cold. Oil pressure is fine at all times. I was seeing about 2 BAR at idle and about 5 BAR at 3k+. After the turbo drained all my coolant into the crankcase, I wouldn't be surprised if a bearing spun. Any thoughts?

Yup sounds like the same problem when my rod bearings went. Only a certain RPM in the beginning. Do not start your car again. Drain some of your oil and check for debris. If your bearings are going you will see metal in the oil.

Thanks RB... I will know more when I get home in a week and open her up. Anyone in CO up for an engine pulling party?

P.S. What is the average cost of a rebuild if you do it yourself (except machining, etc.)?

is it true that there is some cage under where the bearings and all that stuff is where you have to pull the engine to get to? Remember telling you about it chris?

The metal flecks you are looking for are copper colored - not steel/aluminum colored.

#2 Rod Bearing...

I don't think the belts are supposed to be this loose... They flop around...

Bearing Flakes - The new cereal craze that's sweeping the nation!

One unrelated problem... My rotor keeps burning up! This one has about 3k on it... The one previous to replacing this one was a black, melted stump of plastic! Need to replace my coil?

Ouch, that's gonna take some machine work.

Dunno as far as an answer on the rotor but for what it's worth mine looks about the same.

Thanks NZ! I just hope the rebuild doesn't exceed $3k then I'm really screwed. (3k is my spending limit on the good ol' Visa)

The rotor seems a little strange to me... The spark is not jumping off the top plate like it should... not sure why. Anyone else have this problem?

3K? I cant see how it could, expecially if you are doinf some of the labour. I got a quote for a rod bearing job on my car when I heard a knocking, and it was USD600. I imagine you are getting more goodies at the same time?

It might have been $600 if he'd shut it off as soon as he heard a knock, but it was probably already too late.

The extra $s will go to repairing the damage to the crank.

I had mine redone with my new pan gasket, this happens too often to take a chance.

It was running with a load for about 30 feet under 3k RPM. Then it was running for about five minutes at idle. That was it. I hope I caught it in time. The pictures above are with the rod bearings still on the crank. That picture is NOT the crank itself! I haven't taken them off to see what kind of scoring is on the crank. The rod cap looks pretty good...

I plan to rebuild the whole thing while it is out. Long-block + seals + multi-angle valve grind + P&P + etc... Maybe lighten crank and flywheel - and clutch job... We'll see how much that will end up costing. I hope I don't need a new crank and rods but I might.
