I am considering a purchase and having a hard time confirming some specs. Seller says he has owners manual with addendum stating the engine installed is not the normal "turbo s", was one of some 500 units from next years model (or the like) and quotes 255 hp, 0-60 5.5. Can anyone verify that that is correct for the 3 liter 44/41, and has anyone heard of any similar installations? Also says wheels are 968. VIN# WP0AA295XJN151217. Mid miles, enthusiast owned, sounds like he knows what he's talking about (I'm more familiar with BMW) but I can't seem to find much on that engine.
88 model year had both the standard model with the M44/51 2.5L 220hp engine and the Turbo S model with the M44/52 2.5L 250hp engine. 89 model year had all the 88 Turbo S parts standard including the M44/52 2.5L 250hp. M44/51 or M44/52 should be stamped on the engine block. Also, look in the rear tire well for the build sticker with all the options listed. Another quick tell would be an additional triangular gusset added in the engine compartment for stiffness, but I forget exactly where that is at the moment.
Thanks for the info. I have seen reference to a 2.7 liter and 3.0 liter, anyone know the applications on these engines? The car is in Colorado, I'm in NC. Don't know if I can make this work or not, all things considered.
Just to be clear, only the US 1989 944 Turbo had all the Turbo S parts from the previous year.
I wasn't aware it was only in the US - thank you for that!

I believe those are the normally aspirated 944 S & 944 S2 engines?

the base 89 944 had a 2.7 big block short stroke with the big valve head that is a one year production head which makes it worth a lot, all the turbo parts bolt right to it making it a great upgrade for a “big block(meaning 104mm block vs 100mm bore)” turbo engine.
the 89 944 S2 was a 3.0 DOHC drivetrain similar time the 87-88 944s model but has the 104mm block and longer stroke. And has many turbo parts installed like the brakes and front bumper.
