Hey guys....I just noticed the back of my top shaft housing has a round cover which is loose. I have a 86 951 and a 85 n/a. They're both loose but in the n/a theres a lot of oil where this cover is and I was wondering if this is a vent of some sort or is it leaking oil through there. Thanks .....

actualy, my non-turbo is the one leaking, but dont know if its coming from behind the shaft cover where theres a round cover that has play or form the oil filler-separator. Does that mean there shouldnt be any play in that cover? Both my turbo and n/a have play.

Those covers have a o-ring which does the sealing. If they are loose it indicates the o-ring is old and worn or hardened. If it isn't leaking then it probably will be in the near future. Have they ever been replaced ever?

Thanks Dand! NO they havent been replaced, well not that I know. So this cover should not move? Guess thats why I'm getting a puddle of oil in that area. One more thing...maybe you know why if I check in the filler-separator can I can see a small amount of oil sitting there like it never dumps into the case. My 951 doesnt do this.

the balance shaft housings can be a p.i.a. to remove, you can clean and de-grease the area and apply a liberal coat of rtv silicone to the area around the rear plug and seal it for a good long while. I have done this to several, and even after a couple of years, they are still dry. The secret is to get the area really clean, clean it with a good brake cleaner, let it dry and apply the sealant.
