Default Lower BS cover reseal writeup

I decided to do a comprehensive writeup on how to reseal the lower balance shaft cover.

1. Clean outer mating surfaces with degreaser and brakleen, make sure to get some in your eyes.

2. Put on some rubber gloves

3. Get some hondabond 4 or yamabond

4. Smear sealant liberally around outer housing and especially rear plug.

5. Wait for rennlisters to tell you this is an abomination and you should have just taken the 15 extra steps to remove the cover and do it properly, just to have it leak again in a year.

6. See attached pictures.

I don't think it is too rare to see others seal the rear plug that way.
You know, "This is only temporary unless it works."

Someone on this forum makes replacement seals out of DuPont Viton, same material as the valve stem seals which imo is what Porsche should have made them from. I have them of all my cars and they provide a more permanent solution.

I love simple solutions. Let us know if it holds up.

Unfortunately, your motor is sure to have a terrible oil leak. I'd recommend an oil pan.

Another weight-saving secret!

Actually, it's a century old idea....

Just cut the oil pick up tube and run some hose from it to a drum of oil in the car, voila, instant dry sump.

I remember reading about someone making upgraded rear balance shaft seals, but can't seem to find anything on them. Any additional info/links on these would be greatly appreciated...

It was @Voith on this forum that organized the Viton balance shaft seals. I don’t know if he still does but I’ve tagged him, and he is pretty active here, so maybe he will chirp in on this post.

So long as it's a standard size o-ring you should be able to order some up from McMaster or MSC. If I didn't just move I could have grabbed one to measure or checked notes on my PC but I don't really have access to either right now. Pretty sure the size is listed on PET, or search the part number on google.

Its not an o-ring, it’s a seal. The custom replacement made of Viton looks like this.

It is probably the worst oil leak design flaw on 944 engines, I've had few seal experts thinker with covers of old and new version of engines, and this is what they came up with. I still have few of each if anyone needs a pair.
