Default Shim, new spring, new WG with GURU chip

My car is still in the shop waiting on misc parts (like interior rear black panels for 1987 951).

I am installing the new Guru 18psi chip.

I have three choices.

1. get the WG shimmed (though i have no shims nor know what to tell the mechanic to get)

2. the mechanic says he can change the WG spring

3. I can always buy a tial 38mm.

Whats the choice and the relative time involved?

Hi,
The shims would be included
in the chips that you got from Danno.

Don't bother to change the spring.
The labor cost involve in cutting
up the wastegate is not cost effective.
Buy a mod one from Danno or get
a Tial from My Swiss

Blueman I make a shim out of aluminium that supports the entire vacuum diaphram housing. I have an extra if you want it. Email me if you want to see a picture. You have a method of controlling your boost I assume....

BTW- whatever happened with that wg Scott had or was supposed to get..?
Didn't you ever hear from him...?

If you need/want the shim, I'm heading to Crescent City Motors later in the week. I can leave one with Jon or Earl at the parts counter for easy pickup for you, just say the word....

You need to ride west with Scott one weekend for a little get together....

Another source for shims is McMaster-Carr industrial supply. I just got a package of 50 0.5mm thick stainless shims for 6 bucks and change. They're 14mm Outside diameter and have an 8mm hole in them.

Basically they're just washers with a precise thickness and a slightly smaller inside diameter hole than a washer would ordinarily have. Good enough till I get a real wastegate anyway. They also have 1mm thick ones for about the same price.

The website is http://www.mcmaster.com

Oh and Jeremy, congratulations on the new baby girl since you're back and posting again.

Dont forget you cant run your car at 18psi beyond 5000rpm unless you get bigger injectors, and the standard shimmed wastegate should be able to hold 15psi (unless its totally shot)

My next mods will be the new wastegate and the 55lb injectors and MAP kit. Thats a nice comb and should up the power by 40-50bhp!!

Terry S,

Never heard from Scott. In the mean time my car is in the shop getting some work done, so the shim would be great!!

How much time is involved in shimming a WG?

And will it have a noticeable affect?

If shimming the WG will make it work a lot better, i want to go for it, however, i don't want to pay to have the WG shimmed, since i don't do my own work, and then turn around and pay again to have it replaced in the near future, end up paying double labor and double down time.

So Terry, if you're going to be in town, please drop off the shim. It would help me out a lot if I go that route, if not I can return it, give it to another lister, or whatever. Thanks.

David

p.s. my guru chip did not come with shims.

So Slim,

You are saying that if I get a new Tial, I will be worse off because the injectors will be inadequate? Then if I get new injectors, I guess my chip will have to be remapped or go to MAF or MAP.

I don't want to tinker. I want to drive. So I think I'll go with the shims and leave the standard WG and forget it.

I can the new WG when and if I decide to go MAF, injectors.

So i'll go for the shim.

That sounds like the best option too me, the wastegate will hold your boost easily up to 15 or 18psi but if you dont adjust the fuel map then you will be getting into trouble.

Get Guru chips, get a boost controler and get the wastegate shimmed, cost about $500 all in including fitting. Best money you will ever spend..

Get the GURU wastegate!!! 190$ Holds any boost I want and spring is stiff to allow less moe build up. Doesn't start to open till 10-12 psi. I see 15 psi in first gear. It 's right at redline, but it hits 15 psi.

"Dont forget you cant run your car at 18psi beyond 5000rpm unless you get bigger injectors"

Is this true Danno???

Is the GURU wastegate a dual port WG like a tial or is it a Stock WG rebuilt with a stiffer spring?

There are both. Stock rebuilt and dual port. I believe the dual port is $250, but have to check with Danno for more details.

has anyone changed out their stock wastegate...that has been in there for 100k+ miles? Are there any impossible bolts to get to? I really want to change out my wg but would like to know beforehand what I am getting myself into...

I agree with J Chen 100%, as hard as it is to remove the stock WG it is not worth screwing with, might as well replace it. Additionally, I would bet the majority are no good anyway.

My standard shimmed wastegate will hold 16psi at 500rpm and 13psi at 6500rpm.

I am not Danno but 18psi abouve 5000rpm requires more fuel than the standard injectors can supply, you are @ 100% duty on them at about 15psi.

Need the 55lb ones if you want to hold any more the 15psi.
