Unhappy Can this short block be saved???

My mechanic says this block can be saved by honing it? My Porsche Tech at the dealer says the block is toast. HELP!? What do you guys think? If the block is shot, what's the best route to go? Best for me is the least amount of $$$. The pistons, connecting rods and crank all seem to be ok. I have a few more photo's that I'll post later.

Can't really tell from the picture, but it wouldn't be the top picture that I'd be concerned with... it's the bottom picture.

What the heck is that?

Yeah it's the bottom one I'm worried about. When the head gasket popped I over heated it a bit. My Porsche tech thinks this is may have caused this scoring. The material missing from this was in between the two piston rings on this piston.

The picture at the top of this post is just an example of the other cylinders.

Based on the picture, the scoring is too deep to salvage. However the only way to tell is to hone it and see if you can get an oversize pistons for it (my guess is that the scratch is too deep, it can be checked with a bore gauge). This will be costly even if it works..

Get a good used short block (least expensive, least experimental), or sleeve the one you have.

This is, however, I helped take it apart and didn't see anything. The piston was really jammed in there to point of having to be forced out. The others came out ok.

I'd love to, but I think that's out of my budget for this car... Isn't that a $3 to $4k deal?

I have a similar condition block... it can't be saved, unless you sleeve it, which is pretty spendy.

Alex,

If you decide to sleeve the block going the 2.5, 2.6 or 2.8L will cost you about the same (sleeves & pistons). However when going to a larger displacement you must address the turbo and the tuning...
Sleeving will cost you anywhere from $800-2400 depending on who does it. Pistons are another $500-600.

The actual block work may not cost more, however the other items will add up.

As I mentioned, a stock short block might be the fastest, least expensive and the most proven approach.

My mechanic Richard Buechler has a high mileage short block in good condition, give him a call and make him an offert. His number is 323-564-3361.

Quick Reply: Can this short block be saved???
