That's a partial seizure, kind of a weird pattern. Take it to a machine shop and have them look at it. The bore might not be damaged too much. Maybe it's just material from the piston deposited there?

It won't cost you much to pass a hone through it.

My $50 spare block that I bought had less damage than this, wouldn't work for an overbore. Good candidate for sleeve + 2.8L .

I have just been through the process of deciding if a badly scored block can be overbored, but from what I learned if the scoring is deeper than 0.2mm then its no go. The one I had was useless, only good for sleeving as well.

I agree that a used shortblock is the only way to go unless you have $$ for a sleeving based project.

Looks ugly. Here is an idea -- how about getting it bored and honed to whatever is needed to clean it up (say 102mm), and then get JE pistons made and coated like the BMW guys run. I know of one shop that swears the JE pistons will work in the Alusil bores. You could do it fairly cheap, to hedge against conventional wisdom (which says JE pistons cannot be made to work).

i'd so no dice, get another, keep it around in case you win the lotto and want a crazy sleeve project

tom's idea's not bad eitehr, esp. for the price point!

Yeah, Kelly Moss (well known 944 race prep show) suggested doing the same thing.

I think I'm just going w/ a short block. I'd like to keep it stock in case I decide to retire my Spec Miata and put the 944 into race duty.
