what would you pay for a blown 951?
Hey guys,
A buddy of mine is looking at 951's and he found one nearby. There's a catch...here's the description:
hey, im selling/trading my 944 turbo....breif history...
im selling this beauty b/c i don't have time/money to fix it. it needs a new connecting rod bearing and should be ready to go. car drives fine, no prob's w/ the tranny. it is in gaurdsman red, w/ tan leather interior, not tears! 249k on car(guy that had it b4 me drove it from tenn. to fla. somewhat regularly) so, make offers, don't be stupid about it...
What would you offer? The guy right now is wanting $3000...which may be a little high? Any comments are welcome thanks!

If the interior and body are in decent condition, it's easily worth the $3k. Even if you have to put an engine/tranny/clutch into it... used.
However... I wouldn't go in thinking that you could just put in a set of rod bearings and everything's going to be "A OK". 250,000 miles is an indicator that it's time to install a complete engine/clutch tranny.

There was one on Autotrader the other day, similar condition, less miles, and sold for $2300. JWL and myself are buying one for a track car, it runs good, just tuned, needs some TLC, 91000 - $3500. So I would guess around $2300-2500.

The one I am working on now was purchased with a broken timing belt for $2500. It does have 84000 original miles and I purchased it from the second owner. Garage kept and originally delivered through "The Collection" in Miami.
I did have to SWEAR to him that I would not even think about parting it out though. He wants me to bring it back by so he can have a look once its up and running again.

Tony, you seriously think a 951 with a rotten engine and 250k miles on it is worth 3000? I picked up mine running with 140k for 3500. You figure if you are looking at an engine rebuild and a future tranny rebuild considering the miles, not to mention anything else that may be wrong with the car, you are looking at a couple thousand more. And with any used car, there are always things to fix, and we all know porsche parts arent cheap and add up quickly. In my opinion 2k tops

It would depend on the actual condition of the car. Obviously I can't see the car nor do I have pictures of the car.
But you would get a ton of parts for $3000 even with a blown motor (with a bad rod bearing, you still have a ton of good engine parts). I could sell that car all day for much more in pieces, thus $3000 doesn't seem unreasonable.
Just because some other people found similar condition cars for less doesn't mean much.
$3k isn't a whole lot of money to ask if the car other than the rod bearing is in decent to good condition if only for the parts alone...

I paid 2500.00 for a real nice '86 951 with the same engine problem. (See my avatar) Very good body and a very good interior (exluding the shift boot and steering wheel). The car had 94k on it. I thought this was fair; a lot of others don't.
