Default NA and Turbo DME difference?

I have a 1986 turbo that had its DME die, so instead of getting a turbo specific DME, could I get a NA DME of the same year, and switch the NA eprom chip with a known good turbo chip? Another way of asking is what is the difference between the NA and turbo DME, hardware and software. Would switching the chips be enough? Or will the NA DME with the turbo chip bypass the KLR and not use the knock protection?

They're completely different, not interchangeable like that.

I recently purchased a Ftech9 DME after experiencing a dme death as well. I haven't used it yet but, its priced very decently and has some great options built in. Can also be used in an N/A application. http://www.ftech9.com/

Yes, it will bypass the KLR. I'd be surprised if it doesn't start the car, assuming you have a turbo chip in it, but it's not wired up for the KLR.
