If the original radio still works than reinstall it. My car came with an original Alpine head unit and a CD player. The CD doesn't eject the cds unfortunately. Im thinking of sending it to Alpine for repair. I believe it may be the first CD player to ever be installed in a car. I dont remember them in cars until the 90's.

The radio wasn't working either. So I replaced the speakers and it started playing. During that time I checked Ebay for a used replacement and the cheapest one on Ebay was 3k. The 88 Lamborghini shared the same radio. Driving up the used market. Thank god it came back to life.

@MAGK944 @Chapman951 @jimbo1111 @paredown @GPA951s , thanks to you all for your replies. Today I received a PPI list from a Porsche specialist local to the car. This seems like an honest review and although I'd love for everyone one of these things to be corrected, I don't see any huge gotchas as most of these items I understand are typical issues with a 33-year old 951. Any thoughts or feedback? I go to see the car in person on Thursday.

Pre Purchase Inspection Results
  • Lead downs. All cylinders are holding at 99%. Wonderful.
  • A/C compressor is leaking oil at the clutch.
  • Oil pan gasket has a slow seepage/leak.
  • Front shock bellows and bump stops have crumbled.
  • A/C has been retrofitted to R134a.
  • Possible power steering seepage at reservoir, or its just venting.
  • Small section of black underbody panel is chipped and is missing its screw and clip.
  • Missing engine compartment light bulb.
  • Rear wiper has been deleted.
  • Noticeable dents on left front fender, hood, and roof. Small scratches and chips noticed as well, typical for age.
  • Windshield washer squirters are inoperable.
  • Aftermarket radio is installed. Original radio is included and was working when last removed.
  • ***** and switches have some fading.
  • Engine compartment and luggage compartment lid shocks are weak and will not stay up.
  • Luggage compartment latches are slow to return to the locked position.
  • Luggage compartment lid seal has shrunk a little over time leaving a small gap.
  • Cruise control is inoperable.
  • Squeak in cabin drivers side front.
Does anything here look out of place for a 33-year old 951? Thanks again for your assistance. Best, 944Armadillo

Pre Purchase Inspection Results. Thoughts? I don't see anything that I've read is atypical of a 951.

You should budget around 6 to 7k if you want a close to perfect car. With you doing some of the work that is. I'm sure you will also find other little annoying tidbits that you will want to address along the way.
I had to also address many things on that list. For example. The shocks. Will require you too remove them for the repair and at that point you can just change the bump stops and covers. Reinstall and get an alignment. Or you may say to yourself its time to change them anyway and spend about $1,300 on koni adjustable on all 4 corners. Which is probably the wiser move because of there age. Unless you can determine they are worth saving.

  • Lead downs. All cylinders are holding at 99%. Wonderful.-------------Awesome
  • A/C compressor is leaking oil at the clutch.--------------------No Biggie, once the car is Driven It will possibly get better, the ceramic seal behind it needs to be "RUN" New ones are sub 400 if it gets worse or presents an issue..
  • Oil pan gasket has a slow seepage/leak.----------------------- Just keep it clean and wipe it off every oil change. That's a Big Job..
  • Front shock bellows and bump stops have crumbled.--------EZ Fix buy Typical..... Age... Cant beat the clock..
  • A/C has been retrofitted to R134a. --------------------------------Great Esp if you want to Drive it and not look at it.. :-)
  • Possible power steering seepage at reservoir, or its just venting.---- I have come to the conclusion that the only way to stop a 944 from not leaking PS Fluid is to put a manual rack in... I replaced EVERY hose in my 86 and still have seepage..
  • Small section of black underbody panel is chipped and is missing its screw and clip.---- EZ Fix
  • Missing engine compartment light bulb.-------------------------They still make them.. couple o bucks at parts store..
  • Rear wiper has been deleted. -------------------------------------I have 2 of these laying around.. and I must admit, in 20 years of owning 4 turbos.. I have never used it other than accidentally bumping the switch..
  • Noticeable dents on left front fender, hood, and roof.-------Then you wont feel as bad driving it :-)
  • Small scratches and chips noticed as well, typical for age.
  • Windshield washer squirters are inoperable.----------------- Typically Pump... 944Online has them brand new.
  • Aftermarket radio is installed. -------------------------------------All mine do, Bluetooth is a wonderful thing.. and Yes.. I kept the stock ones just like this car....
  • ***** and switches have some fading. ------------------------They make "Overlays" for the console switches... the AC Snowflake and DEF button are the most concern because the only way to renew them is put in a new switch and they need to be soldered in...
  • Engine compartment and luggage compartment lid shocks are weak and will not stay up. -----(actually good) -DONT mess with them, If you put new shocks on you will invite the rear glass to delaminate from the frame.. This is a 944 Quirk...
  • Luggage compartment latches are slow to return to the locked position.--------- Old lube... no Biggie..
  • Luggage compartment lid seal has shrunk a little over time leaving a small gap.---- About 90 bucks for a new one.
  • Cruise control is inoperable. ---------------------------------------- There are used units out there.. Ez fix They are plug and play.
  • Squeak in cabin drivers side front.----------- Turn the radio up LOL..

@jimbo1111 I see cars like this on BAT selling from 16k-24k. None of these cars are perfect at this age and will require work. This one seems well sorted and loved - it just got another $600 in maintenance yesterday in preparation for my face to face. It’s been sitting for months with a $22k ask. I feel like $18-20k is probably more in line with market value. Any thoughts?

Its subjective! Any car over 12 years old is basically worthless. Nostalgia is the driving force for worth and not actual book value. People your age that grew up loving these cars are in the position of actually being able to purchase it now.. Will that hold true 10-20 years down the line?

@jimbo1111 , I think the translation is it’s worth whatever you’re willing to pay for it. I get it, but I still believe in buying smart! Thanks for all your feedback... we’ll see how this car lines up tomorrow. Best, 944Armadillo

@Chapman951 , my goal is a Friday and weekend driver and keeping her as stock as possible outside of tasteful “upgrades” on things like shocks. Some of the things noted are simple fixes like the trunk hydraulics and I’ll probably leave the rear wiper off - seems like a common delete. Cruise control is not important but I’ll try to repair it at same point. Will probably correct the washer sprinklers as I like having that. The rest will come with annual maintenance as I see it. I have an old 3-series that’s become my weekend car and if it’s any indication, I’ll put less than 2000 miles per year on the car. That’s what I’m looking at

Team Renlist 944 Turbo Forum, I saw the car in question, spent the better part of a day driving it and meeting it's mechanic of the past 11 years, and then bought it. And then I proceeded to drive it 2800 miles from Washington DC to San Diego: DC to Nashville, Nashville to Dallas, Dallas to El Paso, El Paso to San Diego - four 10-hour drives. It wasn't much fun because I was driving without plates (with only a tiny California one-trip permit stickered to the inside front window) at literal speed limit. Do you have any idea how hard it is to drive any interstate freeway at speed limit? And I could hardly get the car out of 4th gear, LOL. Believe it or not, I was only stopped once east of Dallas and the officer was very cool about it. I was also pleasantly surprised to get 26-30mpg driving at night in cooler temperatures without A/C while daytime driving through the desert with A/C averaged 20-24mpg.

I'll start another thread to provide my initial impressions and tell this car's story, but I will say this car drove very smoothly and ran cool the entire time. The only thing it didn't like was really bad pavement, LOL. I guess this is not really surprising for a car with only 59,000 miles, but still it was good to see that all of it's maintenance has kept it running in prime condition. My next and most immediate project is getting this thing smogged and registered right here in the state of California. Wish me luck!

Here are a few photos taken on the drive home - the first outside of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX, the second a sunset outside of Midland/Odessa, TX, and the last next to a giant saguaro cactus outside of Tuscon, AZ. And, yes, both the interior and exterior are as clean as they look. Best, 944Armadillo
