Question Slave cylinder blowing out after clutch job - UPDATE

Hi -

My mechanic just installed the following for me:

- Fidanza Lightweight flywheel
- Spec Stage II clutch with Lightweight pressure plate option

After installing a new slave cylinder (nothing was wrong with old one - I know...), it wouldn't bleed correctly and the clutch pedal would drop to the floor constantly. During the repeated bleeding, the clutch master cylinder also went. Both the clutch master and slave *might* be the original units with 145k+ miles on them and who knows when they were last bled. So a new slave (number 2) and clutch master went in and the system was properly bled.

After ~70 miles of driving, the clutch went to the floor and the slave cylinder spewed fluid onto the ground.

Does anyone know what may have caused the slave to blow out like that? We haven't had a chance to assess the problem yet. Will update with details.

Thanks,
Simpson

rebuilt defect on the seals,,,did you tighten the bleeder and the fluid line? I dont know of the lightweight pressure plate needing a stronger slave. How trust worthy is this mechanic? Kindda suspicious to me.

I agree on bad rebuilt slave. Those things seem to be almost a 50-50 toss up on if they are good.

Just heard from the mechanic, whose very trust worthy (someone who actually wants to do what he does):

The line between the slave and master ruptured.

Check those brake lines!

I agree with checking that line, when I did my engine rebuild I found that hose to be in terrible shape, so it was replaced.

Would not be good to have that thing rupture while driving

The clutch pedal went to the floor, the clutch itself slipped a little, and I had to pop the tranny out of 2nd gear.

There shouldn't have been any damage done, right?

Unhappy UPDATE

Hi,

First, thanks for the help in this continuing battle.

After putting on a new "clutch master cylinder to slave cylinder" hose, the second new slave cylinder blew out after driving the car a few times around the block.

Again, this is what I replaced the old clutch with:
- Fidanza Lightweight flywheel
- Spec Stage II clutch with Lightweight pressure
plate option

Other than a "too high-pressure" pressure plate, could there be some sort of problem with the release fork binding or some other evil that's causing this (ALL bearings are new)? I just want to know for sure before I spend more money o a pressure plate.

--> Prior to the blowouts, the clutch pedal effort is near stock. Not overly stiff at all.

Any thoughts are welcome and thanks again.

Simpson

Mine is at Zims due to leaking line from slave to master, I was,nt able to dianose where leak was , I thought it was coming from my new master clutch cylinder, The line was leaking very little and it wasnt able to hold pressure. Good luck!

How hard is it to change out slave cylinder??

Or the line from master to salve??

As my pedal is getting worse and mech. took a quick look for me and noticed the fluid dips. He couldn't tell if it is the slave cylnider it self, or fluid form the line dripping onto then off of the cylinder until on a lift to look better. Just curious if it is something I can do my self. I also justhad to top off brake fluid resv. I should have got the hint then

The slave cylinder is quite easy.

*Disconnect battery
*Remove starter
*Disconnect hose and remove slave cylinder
*Install new slave cylinder
*Bleed with pressure bleeder and don't press the clutch pedal more than half way in during process

ok, cool.

Hoping the leak is in the hose Can I only tell that from under the car? i.e. does someone else have to be pushing in the clutch for me to see where the leak is???

You forgot the steps of:

* Now bleed it again...
* Pressure Bleed...
* Vacuum Bleed...
* Bless all parts and especially Porsche engineers;
* Remove slave and acuate rod manually;
* Bleed...
* Bleed again...

Even the Factory Shop Manual has a proceedure for when it won't bleed...
