Old Cat New Inspection Fail!

Old Cat New Inspection Fail!
Hey guys wondering if I could get your advice on passing the sniff test. Fortunately, I’m not in CA or NY so this should not be too hard. The car is a1988 944 Turbo S which is stock with the exception of the Lindseyracing M tune. This was my dad’s car and the goal is to run it as close to stock as possible just like he did when it was new. It has been a long haul but we have replaced pretty much every seal, bearing, vac line, one can imagine. We think we have eliminated all vac leaks. I know famous last words. But if so then the thirty-year-old cat could have finally given up the ghost. What are my replacement options? If price were no option I would just buy a new one from Porsche but $3700 is a bit much.
If this fails then what would you guys suggest for a cat replacement?
- I’ve seen DEC PO82609B which looks like a bolt on solution listed for $350. However, at that price it makes you wonder how much catalyst is in there and its longevity.
- Fabspeed has a bolt on option for $695 but it is only a 200cel unit.
- I guess the 3rd option would be to cut the existing unit out and weld in a new one.
If this fails then what would you guys suggest for a cat replacement?

easy way would be to look up Magnaflow or Walker brand "California converters" (even though you're not in CA), plug your make and model into their catalog and it'll give you one of their products that should fit reasonably well for about $100.
cut and weld it in.

I went through failing emissions last year. Replaced my original cat (160k US miles) with an original "like new" one I bought on ebay for $200USD (indeed, looked new and even had the factory stickers).
Failed again, this time slightly worse numbers!
Car at that point all stock (still is, except for MBC).
After changing the head gasket and the leaking "oil cooler housing" seal (thing that houses OPRV; no oil cooler in there actually), not only did it pass, but better numbers than I've ever seen in my 10 years and 100k US miles of ownership.
I'm betting that with my old cat, I would have passed just the same--and that one has some honeycomb crumbling out of it.
How many miles on it? Have you opened up the top? When I changed my HG, I cleaned a LOT of carbon build-up from the pistons. I also had the "head job" (by the Drunk Machinist no less)
The car ran pretty darn good before I cleaned all that crap off. Performance-wise, can't tell much difference to now. But emissions-wise, unbelievable difference!
Might not be your cat
