Default Mystery A/C problem-HELP

My fan switch was crazy. The "0" would be on sometimes, sometimes off. Then 1,2,3,4 would work sometimes, sometimes it would be 0,1,2 are off, then on 3 the fan would hit, go back to 2 and 2 would then work.

So i replaced the fan switch, heater control, etc console. The problem went away for a while but was still iffy. Then last night the fan switch decided 0.1.2.3 are now off, no wind. 4 is blasting. So i have full blast or no blast.

Did i have TWO bummer switches (the replacement was second hand) or is there something in the fan motor that could do this?

Thanks

I had heard this was related to the resistors in the cowl area. No firsthand knowledge though, sorry.

did you replace the resistor cluster in the front cowl? That is usually the cause of missing blower speeds. The resistors mount into the driver's side of the cowl, if you lift up the front edge of the plastic cover you will see the cluster in the top of the air intake. It is secured by two screws, if you hold the cover up you can remove them and pull it out.

Good luck

There are these tiny little bimetal switches on the driver's side under the plastic cowl that covers the ventilation system. If you clean them this problem might go away. I had a hard time getting in there with 600 grit sandpaper so I used a drop of battery acid on each and then flushed them clean after they cleaned up.

There are a few articles in the 944 forum about this which you might search for also.

Oddly, there was a howling noise in the dash when this happened.

Today, 0.1.2.3 were dead and 4 was a blast. Then later in the day, boom...the speeds came back. my car is possessed.

maybe the resistors possessed it!
