Default Latest Dyno Run - SFR 420 Kit - New Turbo @ 17.5 - 18psi

For those following the SFR 420 kit...

Dynoed the car today. 401.5HP & 379.7TQ SAE Corrected on a DynoJet. 17.5psi boost - 18psi hard to tell... but that's a very close approximation(still running stock intercooler!!!).

Changed to smaller hot side turbo for this run (same 60-1Hifi compressor):

Old: .70a/r "O" trim wheel

New: .58a/r "P" trim wheel

Old: Turbonetics ball bearing center section

New: Garrett non-ball bearing center section

Had a couple of ignition misfires. Going to colder plugs (8) and bringing the gap down to .022... should smooth out top end. We cut it off early because the ignition was not up to task (and it has a complete new ignition from the coil to spark plugs). The Honda boys tell me that they run the gaps at .018! I was at .028" (and hence the problem according to them).

The intercooler is killing me! I get there's another 25RWHP with a new intercooler.

Here's the sheet:

Don't bore me Tony. Just don't do it.

Nice numbers! And only 17.5 psi to boot!

Do you have a dyno sheet from the old turbo? I'm curious to compare where the boost comes up and how the torque drop off compares.

Nice power, too bad its not at 15psi though!

Is it just me or does it look like there's more power to be had after 5500 rpm after you get the ignition issues taken care of?

Nice! Was this on your car? If so are you still going to sell it?

Were you on race gas or home brew option, surely not on 93 octane..

Again, great job!

Actually it was a mix of 5 gallons of C12 and the rest 91 pump... which was left in the tank from my last weekend running with the PCA at Willow Springs. I work from home and I don't drive much... so gas lasts a long time! :-)

PS> Pump gas here is 91 octane! And BTW, it burns a lot worse than the old 92 pump gas... more like 89.

Hey tony who did your turbo? My K27-6 isn't very old but it's using lots of oil. I wanna go bigger to match the ported head I'm working on. Thanks, Mike

How do you know your turbo is using oil?

How do you know that your breather isn't feeding oil out into the turbo inlet? Common Problem.

It's pretty rare for a KKK to have any problems.

PS> Turbo-Performance did my newest turbo (www.turbo-performance.com) Ask for Turbo Bob.

PS2> Unless you are already at 340+RWHP, you don't need a larger turbo.

Yes (It's a Milledge head with another $1k spent on it with even further porting above and beyond what Milledge provides).

My bov is blowing oil all over the bottom of my hood. Smokes on startup pretty bad and whenever I get on it. Same things my K26 did when it expired. I got the turbo last NOV so it's just over a year old. I thought it was unusual for it to go this soon. What would cause it put oil in through the breather? Car is 7% on all cylinders on leakdown test I ran one about a month ago. Although it definately sounds like a vacuum leak when I remove the oil cap with it running. What do they use for crankcase ventilation exactly? I wish I had an extra vacuum pump from my dry sump setup on the midget, I'd put one on the P-car. Thanks again Tony.

>>>what's involved in running a true garret.<<<

Modified turbo/engine mount

Modified/different cross over pipe (bolt patter is different)

Modified/different turbo down pipe

(SFR sells all the stuff to do it BTW)

I searched and found one of Tony's old dyno runs here

Tony do you happen to have a dyno chart with the old turbo at 18psi?

Sorry but no. That combo was only tuned for approximately 1 bar boost.

I tuned the current setup for a bit more (2-3psi) boost that I plan to run on the track.

As you can see from the latest dyno... there's clearly a flow limitation @ around 5600 rpms (and the intercooler is the only thing left!)

What's with the turbo eng mt. is it a custom piece or a modded stock one? I didn't see it on tim's site. you have to restrict the oil flow on a garret right. How come the change away from the ball bearing.
