Default 1988 944 turbo

I'm thinking about buying a 1988 944 turbo and I wanted to know what kind of performance mods there are. I read that it has a 0-60 of 5.7 stock, is that true. Also with $5,000 what would be the best mods to do for the best performance and handling? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also how well do these car hold up with a lot of mile on them. The car I'm looking at has 87,000 miles. Before I do any serious mods should I rebuild the engine?

87,000 miles? that motor is just a baby.....

But things like rod bearings, water pump, and the timing belt are good to replace if you don't have a record of the last time it was done.

$5,000 in mods?
Chips, Test Pipe, Brake Pads, suspension (sway bars, struts / springs).... and you will have some change left over....

For modifying our cars there are plenty of options and suppliers. I suggest doing a search on this board.

In 1988 there were two versions of the Turbo. The 88 TurboS has a great suspension package along with super brakes. I am a firm believer that unless you are using your car as a track delegated vehicle Porsche did a great job on their selection of suspensions. I humbly suggest taking a driver's education course prior to making any suspension changes particularly due to the trade offs

Edit: I agree with above. if the timing belt, water pump, and while your in there rollers change hasn't been documented to start there first. Secondly, I would change out vacuum lines, idle stabilizer hoses, and check those injectors. In my humble determination, Lindsey has the best/ most cost effective vacuum hose replacement. in addtion, they have a plate were you can put in gauges as air/fuel (A/F) ratio, boost, and some have EGT (Summit Racing) Some argue for wideband A/F (much more money) ; however, I am unconvinced as the gauges point out that something is wrong.

Then decide on how much horsepower you want as there are several suppliers of that. For argument sakes Fast951 has a package (only one complaint on this board and several happy stand-up customers). Guru has chips. Again, I suggest taking the time to do research on this board before doing business with anyone. Keep in mind that to some delivery time is important, timely customer support ( to me its a tie between Lindsey and Fast951) and what others have experienced with their modifications. Dave at Lindsey you'll have to call. Fast 951 you merely have to just think about him. Keep us informed

imnotcreative72,
Don't rush too fast into modding your car just yet. Unless you have a really well-maintained car, that $5k will only cover your first 2 years of maintenance (without any mods).

Wait til you get the bill for the belt, water pump, roller replacement.... Oh, and don't cheap out and get a rebuilt water pump. I learned my lesson on that.

After that is done and assuming you still have money left over for mods, ask tuners (many already mentioned) for a package. That way you're not trying to make disjointed parts from different suppliers work smoothly. If you have any issues with the car, you're less likely to get help from your suppliers if they know another component that they didn't supply could be involved.

Also, decide what you are going to use the car for. Do you want raw power or do you want exceptional handling. $5k will get you a really good bump in horsepower or a decent track suspension, but not both.

You didn't say where in NY you are located. You might want to contact Chris White at 944 Enhancement (he's somewhere in snowy upstate). His website is home.earthlink.net/~enhancement944/
He doesn't hang out a lot on the Forums but is active on the regular mailing lists. He mods a lot of 951 engines and can give you some good advice.

Most importantly, do your homework and don't rush into anything. Good luck and let us know if you have any more questions. There's a lot of knowledge here to help.

Thanks a lot for the help. Yeah I'm looking more for raw power then better handling. I'll do the needed work as soon as I get the car!!! I was looking at performance packages from this web site http://www.speed-6.com/ I'm thinking about the Stage III package. I hope that if I get that package and a bigger intercooler, fuel system, exhaust, engine management, ect. and run some sick boost maybe I can make a 400+ HP monster. But that might take a year or two. Next week I'm going to look at the car and test drive it before I buy it. Is there anything I should look for that could cause problems? And if 217 crank hp will push the car to 60 in 6.1 second what will 350rwhp do???

ok, first off all, don't run 'sick' boost. You can get 400+ HP with sub 20 psi boost levels. There is heaps of information, EVERYTHING you wanted to know, if you use the search function. Otherwise, check out this site, I think it is some of the best developed mods you can buy.

imnotcreative72, There's an article on European Magazine about modifiying the 951. It just came out. This will give you an idea of what's out there for mod's.

5K is a good chunk of change and will get you running well provided you do the work yourself. Here's a couple of places that offer solid products with a good product and service reputation.....

www.vitesseracing.com
www.lindseyracing.com
www.paragon-products.com
www.speedforceracing.com

Ask a lot of questions with the suppliers and on this board. Good luck.
