Default !! Mahle 3.0 Liter 16 Valve Turbo Pistons !!

GOOD NEWS,

Just spoke to Steve Day at Mahle.
The 16 valve turbo pistons are being tested as we speak, and will be available early next year! He did not know the CR though.

Now we have 4 choices:
2.5 or 2.7 8v head,
bore & sleeve with JE turbo pistons,
stock shaved pistons and shorter rods,
3.0 liter 16v pistons.

The KISS approach, would be to put in the 3.0 liter 16v pistons, and stronger rods and modified crank; although a 3.2 liter sleeved motor would be nice if they are proven to last.

Sounds great.

I hope they make the CR high, 9 or 9.5:1 because the 16 valve head has a greater tolerance for high combustion chamber pressure before pre-det occurs.

Wow, that is breaking news. I just hope it really happens soon as it only took them like 6 yrs to build the 8:1 pistons for the 8 valve head.

Andial has been selling the 8 valve versions to go with the 2.5 or 2.7 liter head.

Default Which head to use??

Decisions, decisions.....

I've had my 3 litre shortblock on my engine stand for the past year just waiting for the correct Mahle pistons and matching 2.7 head. We all know how rare these cyl heads are and how spendy they can be, so the news of a low compression 16v piston is very welcome news for different options!!

How available and how much are S2 16v cyl heads these days?

Did Steve at Mahle give a ball park availability date in '05? Not saying that I don't believe him, but considering how long it took Mahle to produce the LC 104mm 2V piston after rumors of their development began, I hope Mahle's time frame for development/availability has improved.

Great news!! Keep us up to speed when you get more info.

Or about 8.3:1 for safe 1,4 bar

Andial is advertising 104.0 mm turbo pistons for 968. Are they confused? 968 = 16V

In that case they'd better include stronger head studs, too.

Don't hold your breathe, or maybe you should. Mr Day is very well known for telling you just what you want to hear.
