Default '86 exhaust vs. '88 exhaust

Gang, I'm installing an '86 engine in my '88 951.

Is there any point in keeping the '88 exhaust? The '86 has the updated crossover pipe and the exhaust manifolds look identical. Any pros or cons?

I will be sending a set manifolds, cross over pipe, turbine housing, and down pipe to Lindsey next week for leak repair, head shield removal, ceramic coating and 2 piece cross over conversion.

I'm aware of the different 1/4 exhaust manifold as it comes out of the engine with the flex joint in it, but I wasn't aware there was an updated crossover pipe.....what was changed? Changed in 87 or when?

I didn't think that beyond the changed manifold so that it could flex and not break at the joints that not really anything big changed from there back on the exhaust during the production run....

I've got the flex joint on both engines. I'm pretty sure the very early 86's did not have the extra flange between the wastegate and the crossover pipe. Some one posted a picture not to long ago.

Pick either one of the exhaust manifolds and send that to Lindsey. Then send the other one to me. Seriously though... if it's not leaking, would you part with a set at a decent price perhaps?

Best Wishes,
Sach

The 86 models did not have the expansion joint on number 1 and it did not have the extra flange on the wastegate. If your 86 has been upgraded and doesn't leak then no need to change it. Lindsey's crossover pipe looks like a good option to have.

If you have the updated 1-4, you should also have the updated x-over pipe. This is indicated by the fact that the 1-4, 2-3 collectors have a tab between them on the x-over pipe and your wastegate pipe is 2pc. Most reputable shops that changed the manifolds also changed the crossover pipe; some didn't as you can figure out if you keep the part and charge full warranty back....

You can hook the updated pcs to a 1 pc x-over pipe but my experience with that was a PITA!!! Two bolt holes, now matter how you tried to hook it up were off by about 3-4mm. We finally got it done but I swear it took at least 2hrs. When I did my refresh I got updated pcs and a 2pc x-over pipe that sent to LR for the 3pc conversion, nice pc and it makes working on things underneath sweet.

Cool....thanks Ski. I'll have the car at my mechanics garage (he's going to let me do my oil seals there so I have access to his tools, especially the belt tensioning one which he won't let me borrow ) and when there, I'll stick it up in the air and take a look....considering the other things done to the car, I'll be interested in taking a look at that.
