86 because they are cheaper. 87 onward does have later offset though so that you can use 993 996 and boxter wheels without spacers(adapters)

Quick search, bunch of my old video threads. Links are wonky, but cut and paste and you should be OK.

The kind that would be the best is the one that is in the best shape and gets a good PPI that you can afford. Mileage up to about 150k I would say wouldn't deter me if the PPI was good. Others here would probably go higher. Maintenance records are great to see what has or hasn't been done to the car in the past and the current look/condition of the car and those records can tell you some about the current/previous owners.

Budget money for changing the belts, etc. right up front and be prepared to bargain down the amount they want for the car if the PPI shows up some things that need fixing (some things almost invariably will....usually minor on a good car like maybe a ball joint is starting to show wear, a leaky seal, etc.). If it shows up that the clutch is about to go, that's a big chunk of change. If the turbo is blowing lots of oil, that can be expensive to change.

If you're tracking then from what I've read most likely you'll want an 86 because the car is lighter and most of the improved stuff that the 88S and 89 models come with will be replaced anyways.
