Default oil cooler thermostat

I'm assuming the 951 has one. Does it work like a cooling system thermostat (open at a set temp; then close a little if/when the system has cooled a little)?
I've never heard of a failure (maybe there isn't one). What would be the symptoms?
Just curious about this.

The oil cooler thermostat is set to open at 180F. It's located by the oil filter. I don't know of these failing, but I would imagine that the best indicator would be a cool oil cooler when oil temps are above 180F.
