Default Towing a 944

hello all
i recently inheirted a 944, which is currently in Florida. i live in Indiana and i will be making a trip down there to haul back.
heres my situation
1. car is currently not running, possibly fuel issue.
2. i plan on renting a trailer from uhaul
3. can i use a tow dolly or do i have to use trailer. if i use trailer will i need to remove front bumper to eliminate scraping when loading. if anyone could help answer these questions that would be awesome. im excited to get it home and get it running again

if it's a manual transmission a dolly is fine, if auto youll want a regular trailer.
you might want to bring some 2x4 or 2x6 pieces to use as extended ramps to get the low nose onto the dolly/trailer a little easier.

To keep from scraping the front fascia jack the front of the trailer up while it is still attached to the car. This will lower the ramp angle. I never liked the dolly concept.

I wouldn't dolly a car down the block, much less from Florida to Indiana!

Get a full trailer, and real tie downs and secure it properly. Ensure you position the car so that the tongue weight is within the tow-vehicle's spec.

Airdam probably won't scrape, have a spotter ensure this as you drive the car on. You may need to crank the trailer up (so the rear loading height lowers) and the slope of the ramp is shallower. You may need some additional wood blocks or ramps if it is still too steep.

this is my setup for uhaul trailer...probably overkill for one time use but I plan to tow more often for track events. The two boards allow you to get over the tie down bar for the front wheels and keep the splitter from hitting the front of the trailer. My car is about 4 inches to bottom of \front splitter to the ground.

Ok renting a trailer from uhaul
i will have extra tie downs
and possibly some 2x6s to get on ramp
not worried about tongue weight as I am pulling with my Z71
thanks for insight

I tried a tow dolly with my track 944, didn't like it. But flat towing (or toad towing) worked for me for 2 seasons. The trans oil pump runs off an axle, so operates when towed. And tow bars from RV folks are cheap. I drilled some knarly holes in the aluminum bumper for the mounts, welded up the bumper shocks as in "wolf mod" and it worked great. Don't try to back though, same issue as with a dolly. But I've since gone to a flatbed trailer because swapping wheels 2 more times a day was too much of a pain.

I've towed 911s and 944s on a tow dolly for almost 20 years. Works fine. You just can't back up!

Agreed. I tow with a tow dolly because it has surge brakes, otherwise towing 4 down requires a braking system in the car. It is super easy.

Whatever works and you can work with. That was a 96 3.8L V6 mustang with cobra brakes and many upgrades that I have towed many 944's with. Just beware of what your limitations are however towed or towed with. And determining distance to the car in front of you depends on your set up. But always keep a good distance from the next vehicle in front of you when towing. Safety first.

U-Haul trailer comes with a hydraulic surge brake built into the trailer. No brake control required in towing vehicle.
