Angry 944 n/a HELP

87 manual

something broke!! Today I backed out of my driveway and then went to put it in ferst got he stick in the right place and began to let out the clutch and I hear a clunk very distinct and loud as well as felt a vibration through the stick. After that I could put the stick in any gear I wanted without the gass pedal ( felt pretty normal) but the gass had no effect ie did not ever drive the wheels or aomuch as jolt the car.

I really need help, I am in college and need the car as a DD. Any diagnostic ideas or methods would be approciated. I can post more details later as this is from my phone.

These things always happen at the busiest and worst times.

A worn out 944 is not a good choice for a college kid's DD.

Just sayin'...

Well, if you want technical input -- my guess would be ring and pinion failure.

But given the commentary in your post about "I really need help, I am in college and need the car as a DD. [...] These things always happen at the busiest and worst times" I could see you have a more fundamental problem.

You know the game -- pick two:

1) Porsche
2) reliable transport
3) college student budget

But no doubt you'll figure this out sooner or later. Just trying to jump to the chase here...

There are some covers on the transaxle that you can remove and see if the torque tube shaft is turning or not. Start out by jacking up the rear end, see if the torque tube is spinning (problem in trans) or not (problem in clutch).

Thanks for the input, I had not had time to look at it until this afternoon and it turned out to be rather easy to diagnose...

If someone is just a little mechanically inclined I do not think a 944 for a daily driver is a bad idea for a college kid. You can get a good one for about $3500 and we know they get great gas mileage. Throw in an occasional timing belt or broken cv joint and he might make it through college in less than $6500 or so in transportation costs, thats including the gas of maybe $500 bucks a year. After that if he stays away from the major breakdowns that can hit any car, he might still have a car to sell for three or four thousand rather than a 1992 chevy corsica that might be worth $400 even if its running good.
