I want to install a replacement hood emblem on my 1984 944 n/a. I see some posts on the forum that say the nose piece can be unscrewed, but mine appears to be welded on. I am VERY leery about trying to pry the emblem off, cuz what happens if I screw it up. Any fail safe ideas?

Hi Jim,
My 83 is the same way. However, with my emblem it was basically just 'plugged' in to the nose piece. Just pull off the old and push on the new! I'm pretty sure yours is going to be the same way. There was no nuts to put on the back of it or anything. Never hurts to get more suggestions though!

There are spot welds on the early models. A pain really. I've heard of people drilling them out though. So anyway, spot welds and a few bolts to hold them on.

I would recommend just pulling the old one off and pushing on the new one...as we all know thieves especially like porsche emblems. If a thief really wants it, he'll take it. The difference is if it comes off easily without a scratch, or gets yanked and yanked until there's a huge dent and screwdriver scratches all over your nosepiece...just pick up an extra one on ebay...

Mine too - pulls off, pushed on. I used a putty knife. Gently.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all the 944/951s had those plastic inserts in the nose that the two prongs of the badge pushed into. But the badge came with two quick nuts so if it has been replaced in the past the owner may have socked on the quick nuts as a belt and suspenders type of solution. If the badge doesn't move you need to see what is going on on the bottom.
You want to take a big putty knife for a base against the paint. Then a smaller one on top of that to actually do the pry work.

That's wierd, mine was just two prongs pushed into what seems to be rubber. The rubber gets hard, and occasionly pops out on it's own when I close the hood. I take it out now when I race, because I don't want to lose it. Early last year I put it back in with silicone seal, but when I let the hood slam before I loaded it on the trailer, it jumped out. So that's the reason I take it out when I go on track. I know some day I will forget and lose it, but we have 4 spares, so I can lose up to 4. I was thinking of super glue, but have not tried it, as that is what I use on my rear view mirror, and it falls off every other race weekend.(Yes, I sometimes use the recommended mirror glue, and it also falls off.)
