Default '91 944 S2 Check engine light? CA Smog issue.

I just bought a 1991 944 S2 from Oregon and am trying to get it to pass California smog test. It passed the emissions test and all the visual, expect it doesn't have a check engine light. I thought it was just a burned out bulb so I took the cluster out, replaced bulbs, even added some bulbs to blank slots. My cluster does not have a CEL. In the spot where it would be is a picture of a steering wheel and it says Servo.

I put a bulb in the blank spot and now I have a Servo warning light. The wires for the airbag are cut otherwise that would show in the space above Servo. Still no check engine.

I brought it back to the tech and explained this. He looked at the car again, and printed off a picture of what the gauge should look like with the CEL. He even showed me in the book that my car should have one. But it definitely doesn't. What's up? What do I need to do to get it to pass?

You're in a weird world my friend. The 1991 S2 is very much a bridge between the 1990 and earlier 944s and the 1992 and later 968s. From an electrical system standpoint, the 1991 S2 has many similarities with the 968 but they are one year only. I don't know if a 1991 S2 would have a CEL; all 968s have a CEL. A 1991 S2 might have a pre-OBDI capability but I've never spent time looking at one to be able to tell.

You might have better luck contacting one of the many Porsche dealerships in your area to ascertain whether or not your car was produced with a CEL provision. If you strike out there, ask each dealership for contact information for Porsche Classic at the PCNA headquarters in Atlanta; you might get contact information for someone there who could help. Ultimately, it sounds like your tech won't be satisfied until you have a letter from Porsche stating they did not have CEL on the 1991 S2.

Good luck!
