Post add LSD to 944S2?

What are the options, if any, of adding limited slip to a 91 944S2? Watch Ebay for parts? Does anyone make an aftermarket LSD for the S2?

thanks,
Bryan

You're options are:

(1) Buying a used transaxle with a LSD

(2) Buying a factory LSD (used or new) and installing it. That's what I'm planning. Here's a little more information on that option: <a href="http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.asp?id={6DBC7C46-6DB8-4B66-BF95-A00415CCC75E}" target="_blank">http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.asp?id={6DBC7C46-6DB8-4B66-BF95-A00415CCC75E}</a>

(3) Installing an aftermarket LSD. Here's a list of vendors: <a href="http://www.weissach.net/924-944-968_Suppliers.html#TransmissionsGearsLSD" target="_blank">http://www.weissach.net/924-944-968_Suppliers.html#TransmissionsGearsLSD</a>

For street use I'd recommend the Guard Transmission or Quaife torque biasing units. They are quiet, work well, and don't require periodic rebuilding like the stock factory unit does when the clutches and discs get worn. I have the Guard Transmission unit in my S2 and am very happy with it. There are some pictures of the GT unit and contact info on my website in the Suspension section.

Thank you! Last weekend was my first autocross event. It was great, but it made me think more of various upgrades for my 944S2. So far, the list includes better tires, 968 M030 sway bars, and LSD.

they were an essential upgrade on the 2.8 capri's

would you need to upgrade the clutch ?

Talking

Figure I would jazz this post up a bit:

A new type of LSD:
<a href="http://www.phantomgrip.com/" target="_blank">Phantom Grip LSD</a>

The site also has an article on installation.

For auto-x the S2 may not 'need' a limited slip (lsd is never a bad thing if you've can afford it). My '89 is VERY competitive in the Stock 2 auto-x category in the PNW region, it has these upgrades: M030 front susp, and an auto-x alignment, but no limited slip. I recently upgraded to Bridgestone S03 tires, I get some, but very little wheelspin out of corners w/out limited slip. Depending on the auto-x category (assuming you're driving in PCA events) an aftermarket diff may put you in a different category.
The best and cheapest upgrade for auto-cross is a track/auto-x alignment. Tires are important; are you running in a category that allows race rubber? If so, I understand that Hoosiers are necessary to be competitive. -If you have Hoosiers or a similar race tire, I doubt that you could coax any wheelspin out of a non-lsd equiped car anyway. The diff may help push the car around in the corners a bit.
My '86 951 (that I sold to get the S2) originally had no lsd, but I had it upgraded to the factory spec lsd diff. That car had stock susp w/ yellow konis, and needed lsd much more, it made a big difference in that car. It was more expensive than I had anticipated; $800 for the unit, another $200 for the oil pump drive gear, plus tranny 'freshening' (bearings, synchros, -since the case is open why not?), plus labor. I probably dropped close to $3,000 to add the limited slip (and the car still wasn't competitive in auto-x). A competitor of mine found a 'new' S2 diff w/ lsd on ebay for $2,000.
I would definitely get the adjustable ride height M030 front susp if you don't already have it (drop it about an inch) and an auto-x spec alignment before spending $$ on anything else.
If/when I move to a prepared category, I'd get a quaife or similar. The cost is close enough to justify a superior unit.
Have fun auto-xing, the S2 is a great car for it.

oops, my post should have read that the competitor bought a new S2 'tranny' w/lsd for $2000.

Hi jim944s2,

Could you explain the necessity of also adding the oil pump drive gear when adding a LSD?

Thanks.

Karl.

Hi Karl; you've got the cool 968 style rear wing, I'm jealous!
If your car has a tranny oil cooler (the coiled tube coming in and out of the tranny, -but I guess most S2's don't, it's primarily 951's):
the drive gear for the oil pump runs off the diff, and it's a different gear for the stock lsd than a stock non-lsd diff. Finding a used gear is tough, new they're about $500 (and it's just an aluminum gear about 5 inches across). I understand that the clutch-type lsd creates quite a bit of heat, and running track events will cause premature tranny failure, so a cooler is necessary w/ the stock clutch type lsd for lapping events. A good race shop should be able to make an electric pump oil cooler for your tranny though. But still, the cost would be similar to just going with a quiafe, and as I understand it, they don't make nearly as much heat and the cooler is not as important.
