I just bought an 83 chassis with a blown engine (rod bearing),otherwise complete, for $500.00. Anderson Motorworks is going to rebuild the engine and put in a cage and safety equipment. I know NASA is managing a series on the East Coast. They had 33 total drivers in the series for 2002. See 944 Cup.com. Arizona has a series which they call spec 944. They have a website,too. I had the same idea of creating a 944 spec series about 5 yrs ago when I was managing San Diego Motorsports and would love to see something come alive on the West Coast. I'll have my 944 prepared to match a Porsche Owner's Club class as well so as to take advantage of their busy racing schedule here on the West Coast. Anybody else interested? The cars are cheap now, they're a blast to drive, and the tight spec racing will be a challenge and a rush! I'm listening....

Phoenix is a 6 hour drive...but I love Firebird( first ran it in '87)and PIR too. I can run regularly with the POC in their Cup racing series, as well as their short track series for practice/tuning. I obviously can't race on the East Coast with the 944Cup.com guys. Sounds like I'll have to start some kind of group out here on the West Coast! Would a group of you Arizona types be interested in coming out to Willow Springs in 2003 to showcase the idea of the series? I'm sold on the idea(cuz I had it myself). The POC is racing there 5 times in 2003. I believe they were planning to do a weekend with the Grand Am in Phoenix at PIR too.

We could probably get a group together for a Willow Springs Trip in the spring. Most of the guys in series have NASA licences and not PCA or POC. Maybe we could meet-up for a NASA event?

Has the 2003 POC season been finalized? I saw there was a tentaive race at PIR or WSIR in March? It was still open for debate last time I saw?

I also race with the NASA 944-Spec.com in Az. I am up for racing in SoCal/Vegas depending on the dates. Humm? I can see it now... The West Coast Challenge!!! Or is it the "Dual in the Desert" v2/part ????
I believe that the NASA 944-SPEC.com series will be racing in conjuction with the PCA club race in Feb(?) at PIR hope to see you there.
What class would a 944-SPEC.com car run w/POC? Would the car be competitive in the class?

That 3.21 liter NA engine is ready to drop in that spec car...ooopss...I mean that uh...hum....freshly prepped 2.5 liter motor is ready. Whew, see that Timmy old boy, I almost blew it didn't I?

I'm kidding, Tim is a stickler for rules, believe me..we go round and round with the POC rules LOL.

One thing Tim, what if one of your races for the Spec series falls on the weekend of a CUP race? Does Neal get double time? he he he

If I may ask what kind of HP numbers do you expect from Tim's 2.5? Anything special done to it?
Not sure about engine POC rules in Tim's class.

I just finished my engine rebuild and it was basicly stock since we really can't do anything to the interals. Just shave the head a bit (max 11:1 CR allowed by rules, but I am not close to there.)

Hope fully I will get chance to put my car in the dyno soon to see if it is aleast on par.

As far as I know, Tim will only let me build a completely stock engine, I don't even know if he wants any crank work done. So as far as numbers, I might be able to squeeze a couple over stock advertized, but even that hinges on Tim letting me do some headwork. I can throw some great porting on that head, but will the rules allow? I know i can take.05 off the head for some compression, I have done this before, but thats about all I can think of for this motor.

Tim loves to drive, and more than anything, he would love to have a level field, showing driver against driver. Now, racing being racing...we all know rules are being exploited, limits being pushed, loopholes are always found..and basically, there will prabably NEVER be a perfect race in which driver/driver are matched.

So, Tim...what are we going to do?

I don't think porting, extruding, or thermal coatings are allowed. Just the milling of the head to get 11:1 regardless of your pistons.
Are you guys going to make the NASA/PCA club race at PIR in Feb?

Had the motor running Friday and did some engine break-in.

Did the torsion bars saturday and sunday along with a swap to the 924S cast aluminium rear trailing arms. I also lower the ride height by 1/2" in front and 1" in the rear so it sits level now.

I did some more engine break-in today.

So I need to change the oil, bleed the brakes, re-install the hood and give Chris a call in the Morning. I would like to get it in for Alignmnet, Corner Balance, & Dyno run before Saturday's Race.

Well thanks for the info John. That is kind-of what I figured. From the Dyno runs I have seen for 944-spec cars 123 rwhp is about stock. Good cars make about 130 rwhp. I have heard that one car made something over 142 rwhp on a 87 motor, but either the builder has found the magic formula or he is just outside of spec rules. Not sure which, but many suspect the latter. Anyway do you think a stock 87 motor with max C/R of 11:1 needs to run race gas? Or will it be fine with 91 oct street gas? Heard a rumor that 140+ hp guy needs to run race gas and cannot use street gas. Seems fishy to me!

I don't know if I would run 11.5:1 on the pump in a race. There is a lot of heat build up and stress. Mybe on the street, but not racing. I always overkill on the track. Its better than a DNF.

140+ at the tires on a stock motor huh......stock motor...hmm.....well, maybe a stock motor with some headwork, mild cam and compression increase :-)

Oh, I don't know.....

Jon Milledge put 185 hp to the crank in an IT engine which is built to the same rules. The only headwork allowed it valve job (within stock specs), milling to increase compresssion 1/2 point, and port matching to 1" from the flange mounting face. Cam is a blueprinted cam to stock spec. Fully legal for ITS and thus 944 Cup.
