Default Building a 944 Diesel..

Hello,

I'm Johan and come from the Netherlands.
I've always driven and tuned diesel engines so i thought it would be nice to put a diesel engine in my 944.
It's a 1984 NA 2.5 Porsche 944.

There is a lot of knowledge about these cars here, i would like to share my project.
I can use some help with some stuff

I put in a engine from a MK5 golf.
This is a 2.0 16v TDI engine and should do about 250 hp and big torque with big turbo and stuff.
Here some pics of my project so far:

I've bought a S2 for parts.
I want to put on the wider alu suspension.
And put on the Turbo/S2 nose.

I've bought a rollcage for the car:

...and turbo brakes:
.

I hope to get it back on the road in a few months..
I need to get it painted, and long ratio gearbox with can hold some torque..
I've planned to go to the track 11th of march, so i hope it will be ready
Hope you guys don't hate me for putting a diesel in a Porsche ;-)

Johan, what a surprise!.. ;-)

But ehh, now i think the question was: what about your gearbox? Because i dont think the N/A gearbox can hold the power and maybe the S2 box is too long??!! Now hoping someone here has an answer for those questions!

Great project, perfect engine for the '44! Lots of HP and TONS of torque and if its better than my 2004 Golf TDI was, maybe it will even be reliable. Please keep posting, this is very interesting.

Very cool project!

hey xsbank looks like a nice 944. Hope to meet up with you this summer. Someone has to be proactive and get a regular GTG going in Montreal

What gearbox will you use? Might have to get a custom ring and pinion gears to help accomadate the low rev range and massive torque.

Thanks for the comments.

For the gearbox i still don't know.
I think i'll use a Audi Diesel gearbox.
951 gearbox has long final drive and with longer (NA) gears it will be in the range for a diesel.
But i don't think it will hold quite a bit of torque at low rpm..

But first i need to get the engine ready and running.
Than i'll take a look at the gearbox.
But if anyone has good options i'd like to hear them :-)

The 951S box would be plenty strong, but you would need to replace the gear set so a regular turbo box would be better to use(cheaper to source) then get the NA Gear set in there maybe? People are running V8's with the 951 boxes with no issues.

Nice project! Im a big fan of diesel as well, and this is a great idea.

The 951 gear box is good, but 5th gear at 100 mph is 4000 rpm. Just offering some info, because im pretty sure most vw diesels rev to about 4700 rpm. Im not sure how much the N/A 5th gear will help, but im interested to see how this project turns out.

Nice project. The 5th gear on the turbo box is a short 5th and can be swapped out with the na tall 5th. I still don't think any of the 944 transaxles are ideal since my diesels like to turn at 2200 rpm at 75mph.

Great project! I would love to put a TDI in my 944 when the 2.5 bites the dust (hopefully still a long ways off!). I just test-drove a new 2.0 TDI Jetta today, and wow, the torque is pretty incredible. Just eyeballing the power bands, it seems like NA gearing will get the job done (while changing gears pretty frequently), although the 5th gear still seems a little short. My '83 does 4k rpm at 100mph or so, 3k at 80mph. The Jetta I drove redlines at 5k, and 3k feels pretty wound up for normal highway driving.

I'm curious about the clutch bellhousing. It used to be that VW/Audi bellhousings would bolt up to one another interchangeably. I've heard of the '80s Audi 5000 inline 5 having the same bolt pattern as the 924. Is that a thing of the past?
