Default 944S2 Price Survey

Hi all, I'm fairly new here and I'm shopping for a 944S2 or a 968. Prices seem to be all over the map. Just wondering what is a fair price to pay for a clean, original, well-optioned S2 with no accident history, all maintenance up to date, etc. For argument's sake, let's say 150K miles. I see that many of the S2 posts are from friends in Europe and Australia, so I'll point out that I'm a "US American" and will be limiting my hunting to the Lower 48. Also interested in what you'd pay for a similar condition 968. Thanks!

I would say that's just about right.

And my wife is giving me crap for the $5400 I'm into my 88 NA 70K mile car for???

8K of the miles are since I bought the car just before thanksgiving last year... I am using it as my daily driver 150 miles to and from work each day.. But now am taking her down for a trans refresh, torque tube rebuild, new clutch and new radiator, so I am tacking on about another 3K to the 5400 vested....

to clarify....the $12k is total...including the purchase price of $5k. I think you're on the low side with the #'s above....depending on the car.

Regarding 968's I have seen some real rats go for between $6500 and $10k....the better 968's are easily $10k up....with a good solid car in the $12k to $16k range. I've seen many really nice examples for sale well above $16k....for as much as $23k.

So I think you can get a ratty/well worn/high-mile 968 for what you'd spend for a really nice avg mile, well cared for S2.

In either circumstance, your landing zone (cost to get a more ratty or well-worn/high-mile car into the shape you want)....will likely be as much if not more than what you'd spend to buy a car in that shape to begin with (unless you're going to do all the work yourself in which case there's some economy).

Moral is to know what you want....a well cared for, set to go car with a bigger upfront cost.....or a car more in-need with a low initial investment and a fairly high short-term additional cost to get it 'up to par'.

All depends upon what you want.

When I was shopping, I happened upon an S2 while looking for an 8v.
It was 8k @ 82k miles.
2k over the course of 4 years and 30k miles.

I feel I've been pretty lucky with this thing too.
My old 924 loved eating my money.

A 35K-mile '90 coupe just appeared on Craigslist in the L.A. area. Had LSD and looked just about perfect. Sold for $13.5K (asking price) by the time I contacted the guy. I think that's still a bargain.

As a data point - in March '05, I bought my '89 S2 for $7,700, 111K, and this included a second set of wheels. Common Guards Red/Black and stock everything (no M030). Cosmetic condition-wise it's above average, but not a show candidate. Rust free (CA and AZ car). Original paint with minor chips, no dash cracks.
Maintenance records were also not complete, by the PPI showed only minor issues, and there were records for some of the typical big concerns (timing belts, radiator). I've put about $1K in routine maintenance items, but more in some upgrades since it's transitioning to a street/track car.

From CARFAX, I find that this one had 6 previous owners. So, perhaps a checked past to be avoided?

I point out all these details because it seems that with these older cars, price and mileage are indicators, but far from the whole story. There's no substitute for a PPI by an expert in the 4-cylinder, water cooled cars, and being familiar with the key possible weak points to check out, even if records seem fairly complete. Also - no guarantees with machinery that is 16 - 18 years old - even a P-car.

sad to be selling mine, just listed it tonight.... spent nearly 4 grand on a camshaft and timing chain replacement last year after the chain jumped the camshaft gear. Also had the dash professionally restored with a new cover. Overall a very sweet S2. Asking 9,900 on autotrader, but offering it at 9,500 to Rennlisters

Default European view...

I know you're asking for the US prices but here's another view...

My S2 was 14k€ ($9k) , ~93 tml. Perfect condition in and out. Good 16" tires on D90 wheels. Remember that cars in Finland are very expensive so this sample would have been $8k in US. Did I mention it came with dyno sheet of 200rwhp ?

Currently spent approx $700 to maintenance a year. To modifications.. (cams, cup wheels, SMT6) $2k, upcoming.. maybe $4k (951 250hp chassis, big-black front brakes and "something for the engine").

Over all.. if you don't have a garage or place to DIY you're looking at high costs of labor. Parts are not that expensive.
