Default Extra keyhole on drivers side

I am the third owner of my '87 944. The second owner didnt seem to know much about 944's, cars in general, or anything for that matter (kind of an airhead). I asked him what the extra keyhole is on the drivers side, not on the door, but more towards the back of the car under the rear window. He said it was some kind of security system the first owner put in it, but he didnt have the key for it. The keys for the car don't fit in the extra keyhole, so I believed this. But I've seen so many pictures of other 944's with this keyhole, I though it much be a factory option. Can anybody tell me what it is?

factory option alarm system.. it does use a different key than ignition.. the control box (should) sit under the passenger floorboard next to the DME... mine is a black box size of a deck of cards with blue writing on it..

i didnt get a key with mine either... options i've seen are order a key from porsche or try and get a key made.. i priced getting keys made at $80, and porsche wanted $120 for a duplicate key... if available... and thats assuming the system works correctly..i figure it cheaper / less painful to get a aftermarket alarm installed... just my 2 cents

anything noticably special about the key?

I got 2 from the previous owner... One is for ignition and hatch, the 2nd key does absolutely nothing

Might the second key be for the factory wheel locks.

Thanks. My ISP "lost" my web site just as we moved to our new house. While I got most of it back on line, all the pic files were on my old computer which was packed for the move. So I still have a couple of pics that I need to reset on the web site. We have DSL coming on next Tuesday, so hopefully I'll have the site back at 100% soon. Eventually I plan on a procedure for odometer gear replacement and resealing the hatch (things on my to do list - might as well take pics while I'm at it).

I re-sealed the hatch on the 84 this year, not really a fun job. In fact, I think replacing the clutch is easier.

I agree, that's why it's on a to-do-list and not already done. Actually, I'm looking to find a replacement hatch BEFORE I start on mine. I want to have a back up just in case.

Back to the key, I have heard that a locksmith can make you a key pretty cheaply. It is an audi key blank. Do a search in the water cooled forum. lots of info there.

After giving this statement some thought I realized that I am incorrect. On my 951 the factory alarm is activated by a smaller key that has a rather square top with the word PORSCHE on it - no crest.

I had a key made for about $50 only to find out that the switch is bad. The locksmith said he could rekey the alarm switch to work with the ignition key.

I just discovered this black box yesterday, while at the Car audio install shop. They were installing front speakers, and went in the passenger side under the dash, and out popped this black box. THey said it was a "hands free cell kit" since the previous owner had a cell phone adapter.

Where exactly is the key hole to try and make this alarm work?

I have keys that dont' do anything on the car, so If i can find this keyhole maybe I'll have an alarm
