Engine Swap
Im Lookin to buy a 944 but Im a little worried about the 4 cylinder engine. I currently have a 4 cylinder and I cant stand it. Way too slow! So I was wondering if it is possible to swap the engine with either a 6 cylinder or maybe a small block v-8. Just something to give it more power. If it isnt possible what can I do to give more power? Do any of you know some good websites to get aftermarket parts? Thanks for you response.

Buy a 944 turbo and don't worry about the fact that it has "only" four cylinders.
I saw a 944 turbo this weekend at Watkins Glen that was faster than some six cylinder 911 GT3RS racecars.

Yes, the 944's are sluggish off the line, not drag cars, they are top speed cars. If you want a drag car for off the line, buy a mustang. A 944 turbo will set you back in your seat, I ate a 5.0 out on the interstate the other day, though he tried, the poor guy didn't put up much of a fight at all in the 45-120 range where i backed off and let him catch up.

I was wondering if it was possible and if anybody has done it. I do want a car that will throw you back in your seat. But i dont want a turbo (it seems like its just more that can go wrong). So IS it possible to put a bigger engine in the 944?

Not worth it, you are talking serious bucks to swap in something more powerful. Why would you not want a turbo? There isnt that much more than can go wrong...lol. Guys have put in LT-1 Vette engines, and also dropped 15k to do it.

No problem putting a V8 in a 944. Just takes a bit of fabricating.

Yep pass on the 944 2.5L NA you won't ever be happy with it.
The 944turbo is what you want, but you don't want turbo to deal with. Nice thing about turbo cars is that it easy to add power. 300 hp is very realistic. 300 at the wheels is little more effort, but quite doable too. 400 at the wheels is possible, but it take lots of planning to do it right. Even so they suck at the drags since the are hard to lanuch and the drivetrain is not strong enough for dragstrip launches.
If you REALLY want a 944 go with a 944S2. 3.0L 4cylinder is bigger than alot of 6's and with 208hp it has plenty of power. Down side is not much more power is avalible than stock in normally aspirated 944 or 968. There is just not much out there will the currently avalible bolt ons.
Engine swaps in any 944 get quite expensive really quick and are not worth it.

Engine swaps! HAHA, put an LS1 vette engine into it! Check out www.renegadehybrids.com ! haha, is that the right site? I think it is. Oh well.
4 cylinder Porsches are VERY capable of speed! Our cars came in 6th place at LeMans in 1981 i believe. No one ever believes i have "only" 4 cylinders. Again, take a ride in a 944 turbo thats modded and you will see what we mean about that!

I know that! I brought in the LeMans reference not for speed, but for quality of our 4 cylinder.
The LS1 conversion swaps right in and would give a decent "drag-style" 944 if you change the clutch components out. We all know it can be done, we just hate to acknowledge it.
Compared to todays car, well we cant really compare to todays car since some of the N/As are reaching the 20 year mark. That would be stupid. I would hope cars have improved since then. Sadly, the 944 is still better than most cars on the road anyways.
You can always lighten up the 944 too. Look at the Lotus Elise! Its quick as crap with similar power to the N/A. And thats just using a toyota 4.

Buy a 928... decent ones can be had for $5-6k in the 78-86 MY range. If you don't mind some loss of creature comfort, there are fixer-upper 87 S4s out there for that kind of money.
V8 is great...hope no one gets irate or starts to hate. He he
