Default How to LS1 swap a 1984 944?

Hi so I am new to the 944 scene and have a 1984 944 that does not start, no reason as to why but I want to part it out and put an LS1 in it and was wondering what would I have to do to go about it? This will be my first project car and don’t really know where to start or how this would work exactly, I know I would probably have to move things around or even chop some of the fenders but I am hoping someone with more experience could point me in the right direction, I do also want to part out the transaxle and put an inline trans in with the LS1. Thank you in advance for any info shared.

Here you go: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...h-pricing.html

There are lots of other threads, too, that people have put together over the years. The Rennlist search is much maligned but you can get good results from Google by limiting your search to this site.

Cheers

As far as the trans is concerned, it's better to get a turbo transaxle with LSD. You want to try to keep the balance of the car and the LS engine swap is near the weight of the old 944 engine block.

If you get rid of the transaxle, what do you intend to use for a rear axle? There's not much back there to secure anything but a factory-type axle to, which is why that's what everyone does-along with reason of front/rear balance.

I would also suggest you should see if you're up to the challenge of repairing the car in stock configuration. If you're not, an LS swap is going to be out of the question.

Just finished my 1987 944 S with an LS out of an 01 Vette. Took me the better part of a year working on it when I had the time. Car was very rough when I found it but the Kit from Renegade in Vegas is the one I used and worked great for me. Just put it on the rd last week. What a beast. A slip off the clutch pedal on an aggressive shift from 2nd to 3rd at 4.5 K chipped my pinion though. Now she is noisy off throttle obviously but still drives ok. My thoughts were the Diff was loose anyway and was bound to happen. With an LS you have to drive these things with finesse.

Chip stick to the magnet

Oops

The only transmission that stands a chance behind an LS in a 944 is the turbo model. The NA trans is known to be weak, even behind the stock 150hp 4 cyl.. Without a transmission to handle the extra torque the power of the V8 is moot.

I have a Turbo S trans coming for this car but want to repair this S transaxle as a spare. Is the S2 ring and pinion robust enough like the Turbo because I have heard it was stronger than the stock S R&P. Can the S except a Turbo or S2 ring and pinion? Thanks.

Default New here

Hey, I inherited a 84 944, already swapped to an LS motor. It was a running driver, but the slave cylinder went out and I have been trying to figure out what happened and why. I have had it apart and reassembled a few times. It has popped the plunger out of the slave cylinder and did it to the new one I put in. I finally took the bellhousing off so I could put in a new clutch but couldn't figure out what pressure plate and flywheel is in there, to replace it. The disc looks like new, but something had to happen for the slave to over extend and push the plunger out. I figured it was the pressure plate. It's been frustrating as I didn't know anything about the motor. After removing the bellhousing I found a 62L on the rear of the aluminum block. Still don't know what it's out of. I drove it once, then the clutch stopped working. Please help

It's a tight fit.

I'm not sure how to research the block numbers

It would depend on the clutch you have. You have an LS3 installed. My guess is, you may have the wrong size clutch or the wrong slave or incorrect throw out bearing. Mine is an LS1 and my kit was from Renegade with a Spec 3 clutch
